case of Infantile paralysis were ad
mitted to Sacred Heart hospital
last week. However, only two of the
afflicted persons resided In Lane
county, and the case which have
resulted on the statistical "epidem
ic" showing here were Incurred for
the most part outside of the county.
Dr. A. Trlolo, county health of
ficer, gave this explanation Wed
nesday following a statement In
Portland by Joseph Kelvet. state
representative of the National Foun
dation for Infantile Paralysis. Kel
vet termed the Lane county polio
situation as an "epidemic."
No Epidemic
Although 47 cases have been dis
covered In the county this year. Dr.
Tnolo said that the record haa not
been one of a true epidemic
Inasmuch aa these cases have been
spread over a period of at least
six month and there has been
no concentrated focus of Infection.
The foundation use statistical
methods to determine where epi
demic aid should be provided by the
organization. The disease Incident
rose In Lane county In October, Dr.
Trlolo said, and last week the six
cases hospitalized here accounted
for 40 per cent of all new cases In
Oregon through the week.

Dunn, dean of the school of
forestry.
Ruth, who la the first recipient
of the graduate research fellowship,
la a 1943 graduate In forestry at
Oregon State. He received a com
mission In the U. S. navy upon
graduation and served until 1946,
with that branch of the service.
Since 1947 he has been with tha
department of forest management
research In the Pacific Northwest
foreit experiment station.
The graduate research fellowship
waa set up by Weyerhaeuser to pro
vide opportunity for capable young
men to continue their studies In
problems of forest management. A
similar fellowship waa established
at the Unlversl of Washington.
