TttU week's ierlal review U
"The Plum Tree" by Mary Ellen
Chase. Karly this auminer. when wa
flril heard thai a new book would
be published this fall by Mnry Klien
t'liaw, wa began to anticipate our
pleasure In rending it. We were not
disappointed. Hhe la the author of
several ixm-fli tlon booka aurh aa "A
"Mary I'rlrrs," "Windswept," and
Cloodly Heritage."
Thla new book U a small volume,
not much longer than a short story.
It la a mingling of tragedy and com
edy, grave and gay on every page
and filled with leara and laughter.
Ilia telling la a home fur aged
women. Nurse Emma Davla and
her friend Angelina have learned to
soothe and distract the pain and
despair of Die aged. It la the good
fortune of tha patlenu that, with
all her tuff white uniform and reg
ulated life, Emma hat retained her
humanity, and she well represent
tha poMibla richness and triumph
of tlie ordinary and average person.
Like the lovely blossoming plum
tree that stands outside her window,
her desire for life, for youth, Is con
stantly renewed. Hhe plana for the
time when the will have leisure
enough to travel and to read the
"Complete Bhakespeere"!
The alnry la of three eccentric
and suddenly dangerous old ladles,
and their removal from the home
to the asylum, and the events real
ly test Emma's qualities as a
human being.
All tills Is described In a style
that few present day authors can
equal, and It hat been referred to
as a "gem-like novel." Joseph Hen
ry Jackson says of It "A lot of
readers will find In Its tenderness
and beauty a comfort, wholly lack
ing In many other novels about old
people."

Delightful Concert
The 1MB-M erles of the Klamath Community Concert got off to
aa fine a atart a It well wisher could hope for Thursday night
when Nikolai and Joanna Oraudan presented a delightful concert aa
the 'cello and piano duo of well deserved acclaim.
A packed house greeted the two artist who were particularly
generous with their encore. Each of the four encore wa familiar
and greeted by a round of applause. At the close of Joanna Oraudan'
piano solos, she played the delight
ful "Mnld With the Flaxen Hair"
bv de Bussy, and Chopin lovely
"Waltz." The full two-hour con
rert was brought to a thrilling finale
with Nikolai and Joanna Oraudan
playing as a duo. "The Swan" by
Haint-Saens, and the always popular
"Flight of the Bumble Bee" by
Rlmaky-Korsakoff.
Both artist achieved Instant
recognition a soloists, but some
thing should be said an s rustic
plug perhaps on the delightful and
delicate accompaniment of Joanna
Oraudan when her husband held
the stage with (uch masterful 'cello
playing a ha aeldom been heard
here. The pianist used the seldom
seen combination in a feminine art
ist, the understanding and lightness
of a woman Interpretation coupled
with superb strength and accuracy
which definitely wa not sacrificed
from the standpoint of the technical
performer.
The young fry, who will be con
cert supporter In a few year, were
given a royal welcome behind stage
when the last number drifted away.
Oraudan even offered hi 'cello for
a try-out to any youngster Interested
In playing that marvelous Instru
ment There were no taken, but tt
wa a generous gesture. (LS )
