Navy Claims Subs Can
Launch A-bombs; Plans
To Exhibit Technique

Big Step
The demonstration will be "a very

of sea power,' said Cmdr. John S.
McCain Jr, who has charge of sub
marine guided missile development.
He added:
"The submarine, with guided mis
siles, has become a siege bombard
ment weapon and can be used to
deliver atom bombs. The whole Idea
of using submarines to launch guid
ed missiles Is a long step toward
push-button warfare."

Trials
For mora than three years experi
ments and training have been car
ried on off Point Mugu near San
Diego, Calif.
"Loons fired by the Cusk and
v Carbonero will streak past a SS-mile
column of 70 ships at a speed of
400 to 500 miles an hour at an alti
tude of 4000 feet.
The warships, which took part In
the Hawaii maneuvers, will try to
down the missiles with anti-aircraft
fire. If the ships don't get them,
fighter planes frrom the carriers
Boxer and Valley Forge will get a
chance.
V-l Adaption
The Loon Is an adaption of (he
jet-powered V-l which the Germans
showered on Britain in 1944. The
flight of those buzs bombs, however,
was not controlled by radio as Is
the Loon's. The Loon is powered
with a pulse jet engine.
The Cusk was scheduled to fire
a Loon at KauU rock Monday as
the war games task fleet neared
Hawaii. The launching was can
celled because the transport Oener
al Mitchell, eastbound from the Ori
ent, entered the range area.

Now
Squint Miller, who's working as
telephone lineman, was telling me
about some birds that got into a
fight with his company.
Seems a couple of woodpeckers
set up housekeeping in a telephone
pole. Nobody minded them living
there, but they kept pecking at the
wire causing one short circuit
after another.
Finally, the telephone people
who had nothing personal against
the birds just stopped up the hole
where they lived. But they kept
coming back. At last, the company

ers and set up a brand-new one for
their own use !
From where I sit, we'd all be bet
ter off if w were a tolerant with
our own kind a that telephone
outfit was with the woodpeckers.
