Pels, Lumberjacks in Non-League Clash Tonight
Longview
Team May
Surprise
The Klamath Pelicans match
football prowess with a kings-X
opponent tonight in a duel that may
prove to be more than Just a warm
up for next week's crucial Orant
Pass conference struggle. The Pels'
grid foe tonight on Modoc field at 1
pjn. Is the Longview, Wash., Lum
berjacks. The Longview eleven Invades
tewn with a so-so record but two
bright spot that show they can be
dangerous.
In the season's opener, Roosevelt
of Portland, ranked with Grant aa
the top Rose City team, managed to
sqoeese by the Lumberjack with a
none-too-convtneing win. The
Lumbermen came back two week
later to beat Vancouver, an early
season favorite In the Washington
southwest conference. C to .
Other game were a 12 to 0 win
over Bellarmine. and losses to Bel
lingham aad Hoquiam, 12-19 and
0-21 respectively.
The Pelicans, still riding the win
wagon after four straight victories,
also have been lucky as far as
Injuries go. Coach Bob Hendershott
said today that the Pels will bt at
full strength tonight, coming out of
the rough Medford fray robust and
injury-free.
PASSES SHARP
The Pelicans unfolded a surpris
ing and potent passing attack
against the Black Tornado last
week that broke the Medford team's
back.
If the Klamath are unsuccessful
In rolling out yardage through the
Lumber Jack Une, led by 175-pound
Chuck Goodner at center, Modoe
fans may see an aerial circus.
Both Quarterback Bob McPher
son and Halfback Oene Carlson
found . the passing switch in the
Medford game and could possibly
make a rout of the Washington
game tonight.
8trangely enough, the listed start
ing Une for both teams will tip
the scales at 125 pounds from end
to end. Tackle Bob Strom la the
heftiest end in the northern line at
215.
The opening backfields scale
closely also. Longview will tote a
163-pound back average against 160
for the Pels.
Hendershott win open with Mc
pherson at quarter, Carlson and
Joe Nichols at halfbacks and Joe
Demetrako at full.
EASTLICK OUT
Coach Buck Hammer may be
without the services of Dale East
lick, speedy 'Jack back. Eastlick did
not see action in last week's Ho
ouiam gam and is a doubtful entry
tonight. He Is said to be Longview'
best punter.
Hammer will probably start
Chock Mertsehlng at quarter; Del
bert MeGhee, a outstanding defens
ive halfback; Marion Gray at the
other half post; and Martin Kelt-
wits at fulL KeUwits It a strong
defensive fullback and also a power
runner. However, the 170 -pound
fullback still has a tender knee.
The Pelicans will probably try to
coast through tonight to be at top
power for the Cavemen next week.
But a Longview squad that is high
can make a gam of it.
Uni-Hi Wins
EUGENE. Oct. 21 P University
High of Eugene remained unbeaten
here last night by downing New
port, 32-19, In a high school football
game. It was University's fifth
straight win.

''Unalterably Opposed"
FRICK FROWNS ON
UMPIRE MERGING
NEW YORK, Oct 31 UP) Presi
dent Ford Prick of the National
league declared today he would be
-unalterably opposed" to placing the
umpiring staffs of the two major
baseball leagues under the authority
of Commissioner A. B. (Happy)
Chandler.
There nave been seemingly In
spired reports since the world series
that the baseball commissioner
means to Introduce such a measure
at the winter meetings here in De
cember. I
Under the purported plan, th ;
arbiters of both league would be
hired, fired and administered en-
tirely from Chandler' office at
Cincinnati. I
The boys in blue, one informed j
source suggested, might even be
made interchangeable between the
leagues working National and :
American league games impartially.
In other words, one big, happy pool ,
of umpires.
"Sure, I've head about it and I've
heard It discussed," Prick said, "but
that's all I know. Nothing ha been
said to me by the commissioner,
"If and when It does come up, my
answer wilj be the same, that I'm
unalterably opposed to the Idea. I
would see it as the first breaking
down of competition between the
league, and competition has been
th foundation of the game."
PHEASANTS
The pheasant season started at
noon today and continues
through October 26. Bag limit is
two cocks per day and not more
than six for the season.
Quail season lasts through
October 30. Limit to eight a day
providing not more than 24 are
bagged during the shooting season.
MAUN, HORNETS TANGLE
Th county grid gam that could
hav a definite bearing on th final
standings will be staged Saturday
afternoon at Henley when the one
beaten Hnrntt tangle with un
beaten Malln,
Merrill, meanwhile, co-holders of
I he county B top spot, draws what
should be a breather when Oilrhrmt
invades Merrill in the spud festival
game.
Bonansa travels to Chlloquln Sat
urday afternoon In the other county
tilt, while Burred Heart and Bly
draw byes from league play.
However, Hi Tnijana are tangling
with III KUHH Wllttrat this alter
noon mi the Modoc practice field.
If Henley knocks ulf the Mus
tangs which seems highly Im
probable and Mitlln takes the
measure of Merrill In th big game
November B, the county Irwil
would land In a three-way tangle.
