THE United States census bureau gathers data on
all subjects: how many people there are; what
ages, whether white or black or otherwise; how em
ployed and how housed; married, single or indif
ferent and so on. All this Information Is Interesting,
often vital, and occasionally amusing. The census
bureau Is a great organisation and Ita publications
are numerous. This article must not be taken as a
criticism of that bureau, but rather as a discussion of
a phase of American life.
Such a bureau ought not to be sensitive to ob
jections to the gathering of facts on particular sub
jects. It should no! become Involved in the horrible
rule of political necessity. It should never dodge a
fact Yet tt will not ask. In 1950. whether you are
affiliated with any religion or with none at all.
That question Is as valuable as whether you are
married or single and how many children have
you? Religion is an activity of a great many per
sons, there being In the United States some no
rarities. It would be Interesting to know how many
belong to each, whether they are Increasing or de
creasing: how many are Just born that way or prac
tice their faiths by conviction. It Is not Idle curi
osity to desire to have this information: It provides
a clearer view of the actual pattern of thought In
this country.
o o .
APPARENTLY, the census bureau has avoided
this subject as a matter of factual data, al
though it has, on occasion, conducted special cen
suses of religious bodies, which may or may not be
of value because the religious bodies have different
yardsticks and thereby produce different results,
some of which may not be accurate but rather ap
praisals or guesses. Also msny of them are optimistic.
It Is Interesting to note that prior to the 1040
census, the bureau received many letters on the sub
ject both pro and con. many objecting to being
asked whether he ever had a loathsome disease
which he could only have got by a voluntary act.
but I cannot begin to grasp the mentality of the
person who resents answering an objective question
concerning his political or religious affiliations. I
suppose some assume that It is an invasion of pri
vacy, but they will answer whether they are married
or single which to very private. Indeed. Affiliation
Is a right In this country amply protected by the
constitution: It Is a right so secure that many wear
emblems on their lapels or other devices to Indicate
affiliations. It seems to be cowardly for a person to
belong to something, to partake of Its activities, and
then to deny It
Apparently the religious "denomlations themselves
are not In complete agreement as to the advisability

to declare directly, in response to a otiMtirm th.t

that they practice It privately In their hearts, or
communally through an association.
Certainly such data would provide much food for

One-Finger Surgery New
Heart Disorder Operation
CHICAGO. Oct 19 UP) Single-fingered

and working by touch alone Was
described today.
The American College of Sur

disorder of the heart
Log-Jamming
It to designed to combat a kind
of log-Jamming process Involving
the heart valve most vulnerable to
the after-effects of rheumatic fe

finger explores and guides the knife
through a single quadrant of the
heart an organ whose total size
is aoout that of your doubled-uo fist.
And the surgery Itself to limited I
to the close quarters of the valvular
gateway the funnel shaped "mi
tral valve" linking the two
chambers of the heart on the left
side.
Finger Hole
The operator inserts his knife
bearing finger through an incision
in the wall of the heart an open
ing only large enough to admit the
finger.
When the surgeon gets his finger
Inside the heart, he explores to de
termine diseased structure of the
Involved valve that need cutting.
Then, by a turn of his hand, be
makes the necessary cuts.
The report on the new technique
was msde to the clinical congress of
the surgeons by Doctors Robert P
Glover, Thomas J. E. O'Neill and
Charles Bailey of the Episcopal
hospital and the Hahnemann Medi
cal college and hospital. Philadelphia.
