ten Doctor Booth yet?" Sheepishly,
I admitted. "No, I haven't."
"You should be ashamed of your
self," she said, -after all he's don

Times like you are going through
make people think back. They make
us more deeply appreciate our
friends and those who have been
cur benefactors.
Examined Dad
I remember the time the railroad
sent my wonderful old dad to you
to be examined. The record said
ha was near the age limit for a
locomotive engineer but he could
throw my ISO pounds across the
room, no foolin'. You hsd some
kind of a racket with the Lehigh
that let you ride all over on a pass.
I guess they also paid you for It.
I was a struggling reporter then.
Pop went in your office, down
where now there's a gas station or
something. You said to him. "Come
on, take off your coat and shirt."
It took a guy like you to boss my
dad around even that much. "When
asked him.
"Long time ago." aald pop, threw
out his three score and ten chest
and continued, "by old Doc Brown,
the one with the whiskers. He gave
me six months to live."
"Brown has been dead 10 years,"
you said.
"Yep, and I'm still her aald
pop.
"And youre going to be for a
damned long time, you said. And
be was for snot'-er 15 years.
Pop came home and told mom.
That young Doc Booth is going to
get somewhere.
Get Somewhere
You did get somewhere. Got
where, to consult you. folks had to
to where you were. I went there
one day lots later. Though still a
young man. I was sure I was not
long for this world, from a heart
that was thrwgh. I

I got the rhubarb and soda and ;
my gas pains stopped. You could!
have shook me down good then. II
was scared.
Life Saved I
Then, doctor, there were two,
other times. And for those I have
always loved you as much as one
he-man could love another. Twice
you saved the life of my pal the'
girl who's been my sweetheart ,
from childhood. You've taken soj
many folks apart and put them!
back together that maybe you'll:
not remember but oh. how I da
One of the times, the worse one. !
I sat outside the operating room.
You let me be closer than usual, i
with the door open. I understood J
why and It didnt help. I sat out
there and prayed: "Oh God. help
Doc Booth and Abe Lande. Please.
God do not for my sake, God. I ,
can take It but for hers and for!
my babies." I made this prayer a:
hundred times.
You had told me how tough the'
Job would be. That hour was ages
long to me. The ominous silence
Just now and then your voice,
softer now. -Right there. Lande."
Then a whisper from Abe, -Bad.
doctor, bad." Then you, a bit
tougher, "Shut up, Lande."
More long dreadful silence Just
the rustle of the nurses' gowns, just
the nauseating odor of the anaes
thetic: just, now and then, a direc
tion from you just an awful space
of time for me, yet the nearest I've
oeen to God in all my life. ,
Welcome Classic
And then there rang the most wel-1
come classic you've ever emitted, j
Youll pardon me. doctor, but It!
wouldn't be printable uncensored
here. Close enough. It was:
"Damn It to hell. Land, thank
Ood that's done and well. New
look here, the next time you assist
me dont you ever" and so forth
and so on you. with your arm
around the younger doctor.
You and Abe came out, almost to
another patient. "Everything is
fine." you aald. And after months
it was.
Doctors everywhere and great
surgeons like you have, scattered
in their realms. Just as grateful
hearts as mine. What a pity more
folks don't put their gratitude into
words as I have tried to do. Feeble,
humble and Inadequate as these
words turn out to be. they are the
only medicine with which I can pay
installment on the debt I owe to
you.

Daughters
Milk Champs
Here's a true story about a Brown
Swiss herd sire that's all bull.
His name Is Lauretta's Barbette,
J. B. 4438$. and the animal before
its death was owned by Albert Meter
and Son. Beaverton.
H. P. Ewalt, OSC extension dairy
specialist, says the most recent
proving of the productive ability of
this outstanding herd sire's daugh
ters gives 15 daughters with an
average of 13.573 pounds of milk
having 578 pounds of butterfat.
This is an increase of 1779 pounds
of milk and 133 pounds of butter
fat per cow over the production ot
their dams a remarkable increase,
according to Ewalt. credited directly
to the good heredity of the bull.
The Meier and Son Brown Swiss
herd is one of the outstanding ones
of the breed in the western states,
and shows gains that can be ob-

The price outlook for turkeys this j
fall is a mixed one. C. W. Norton. I
manager of the Northwest Poultry
and Dairy Products company, told
some 175 turkey growers who at-
tended the tenth annual meeting ot 1
the Oregon Turkey Improvement
association at OSC.
Despite the large turkey crop this
year, Norton believes there will be
a gradual price rise as the Thanks
giving market approaches. He thinks
the holiday market In general will
bring 45 to 47 cents net to growers
for hens and 35 to St cents for
toms.
Disturbing r triors
Disturbing factors, however, are
the threatened large-srale strikes
Ui the East and the uncertainly
caused by devaluing the English
pound sterling and the Canadian
dollar. This may work against high
er turkey prices. Norton suggested.
The association asked for con
tinued government price supports
for turkeys as long as other com
modities are supported, and objected
