THE DOCTOR SAYS
Some Diseases Injure Bones
Pioneer State Woman
103, Health Good
PORTLAND. Sept. 14 IrV-Urt
Melissa Hnean chalked another
year her 103d off the calendar to
day. There won't be any celebra
tion, although her health Is con
sidered good.
She Is one of the few remaining
Oregon residents who crossed the
country to Oregon In the pioneer
era. She came with her family when
only nine years of age.
By I'DWIN P. JORDAN, M. D.
Home people are more likely to
break their bones than others. Of
courise, this Is sometimes caused by
clumsiness or to a rather vague
condition which Is called "accident
proneness." In -other cases, how
ever, ther Is something In the
bones themselves which make them
more easily breakable.
Any disease which weakens th
bone structure will lead I easier
breaking. Thla Includes varleua
kinds of tumors t Ih bona and
each diseases aa Mleamyelltla,
which la aa infection of the boar
tissue. Many of throe diseases of
bone ran be treated very satisfac
torily by modern methods f sur
gery. In addition to strictly bone dis
eases of such kinds, ther art some
rather rare conditions which attack
the bone and which may make
them brittle and easy to break. One
of these Is known as osteitis fibrosa
cystica. This condition can be
either localised to a single bone or
it can involve a number of different
ones.
11 causes th calcium which
makes bone hard to be withdrawn
and the development f a rrsl or
sac-like area or areas. Wherever
such sac-like arraa are located, the
bone Is naturally lev strong and
resistant to strain than normal bone
would be.
These are a few of the conditions
which are sometimes called brittle
bones: anyone who sustains a bro
ken bone from what appears to be
only a minor Injury should have a
thorough examination In order to
make sure that some general dls
ease or disease of the bones la not
responsible. Many of these can be
