. High Costs
May Bring
PropertyTax
PORTLAND. Sept. 1J iV-The
possibility that Oregon may be
forced to levy a property Ux that
will not be offset by other revenues
was hinted by the interim legisla
tive Ux committee yesterday.
Such a levy could be required in
the biennium beginning In 1962.
members said, because of an anti
cipated 22,000.000 deficit by 1951.
State tax commission analyst Wil
liam Collier aald the deficit esti
mate was a minimum figure. He
said If government costs continue to
r.se, and he believes they are more
likely to go up than down, the an
ticipated deficit will be much high
er. Only the use of what he termed
the "cushion fund- of 115.000.000
would hold the deficit below the mi
nimum figure, he said. This fund Is i
maintained to keep property taxes
from actually being levied In a year I
of low tax collections.
Collier noted that the current bi
ennium budget Is 13J62.607 com
pared with tlie previous biennium
budget of (71.149.637.
Senator Howard C. Belton. Clack
amas county, committee chairman,
said he had a "very strong feeling
we may go back to the state prop
erty tax." This came as Kep. fcu
gene Marsh. Yamhill county, noted
that the property Ux problems of
the counties may one day be shared
by the sute government.

More than 125 000 In cash awards
and entry fees will be contested for
in the dual IRA and Grand National
competitions during the ten-day
Cow Palace show. Six IRA cham
pionships will be determined during
that period. Including the major
championship, the all-around, as
well as the national championships
for saddle bronc riding, bareback
riding, calf roping, steer wrestling
and bull riding.
During last year's thrilling com
petition the championship In one
e-ent, call-roping, was won in the
final moments of the last night's
competition when a record-breaking
rope-and-Ue by Buck Sorrells, Tuc
son. Arizona, enabled him to over
take Toots Mansfield, of Big
Springs, Texas, and nail down the
title. :

Ronnie Sterland has been selected
as tin boy to wear the large hat
and twirl the drum majors baton
this year as he directs the march
ing band In 1U drills. Several try
outs have been held and Ronnie as
the final selection.
Each homeroom w ill elect a rep
resentative and alternate to the
KUHS student congress tomorrow
during activity period. These elec
tions are held every semester and
the representatives or their alter
nates attend the student congress
meetings, express their opinions
and give rr porta back to the home
rooms of the goings on In student
congress.
Pep Peppers had the emblems
placed on the back of their sweat
ers today as the finishing touch to
their uniforms. Skirts this year will,
be pleated all around and white knit
gloves and white bandanas have
been added to the regulation uni
form. The uniforms will be worn
for the first tune. Friday.
Brandishing receipt books at any
one available, Krater suff mem
bers can be seen diligently trying
to sell Krater subscriptions for the
one dollar subscription price. The
campaign has officially begun and
each Krater staff member is trying
to outdo the others on subscriptions
sold.
This Is the first year of teaching
for Joe Keuter pronounced Kway
ter), since he Just graduated from
the University of O r e g o n. His
classes all consist of the same sub
ject freshman English.
Fishing and hunting are his fa
vorite hobbies, but he declined tell
ing any "fish stones." although he
modestly admitted he had caught
some big ones. His hunting talents
run to ducks and pheasants and he
expects a busy tune of It this year.
Mr. Keuter Is married and has
one child. During the war. he served
as a sergeant in the army In both
Okinawa and Japan.
Mr. Keuter mentioned that ha
likes the Klamath Falls climate be
cause it is much like that of his
home town. Boise. Idaho. He added.
-I think the kids at KUHS are

Barn Fire Destroys
Cattle, Hay
VANCOUVER. Wash, Sept. 13 iX
Fire destroyed a large dairy barn
filled with hay and nine head of
cattle west of here yesterday.
Damage was estimated by Elmer
Ruffner. owner, at $75,000 to 100.-
000. The barn contained 175 tons of
hay. Firemen said a spark in a hay
drier was believed to have started
the blaze.
