But the building for which preparations were then being made wasn't a high school it was a Klamath county courthouse. It was started but never finished, and later a mod ern high school building rose on the site. The large building in the center of this old pic ture was the old Central grammer school, which stood at about the present site of the Medicol Dental building. Ninth and 'Main. To the right was the residence of Mayor Sanderson, now the J. F. Maguire residence, Tenth and Pine. Still fur ther to the right was the Methodist church, long since replaced. The picture was provided by Justice of the Peace Clarence Motschenbocher, Dorris, who is one of the men in the picture. Recalling the excavation work, Motschenbocher said: "We were on the job 10 hours a doy. We took care of our teams before breakfast, watering, feed ing, currying and harnessing them. Then we got on the job at 7 a. m. Six days a week, $2.75 per doy, care of team on Sunday for free. But our doctor wouldn't have tune to treat anyone for cancer or any thing else. This Is the dilema of cancer de tection as presented to CO national expert by the American Cancer society. The experts are attending a three-day conference to determine the most effective methods of finding cancer early and surely. 2300 MO Victims It Is estimated that 22.000.000 Americans now alive will die of cancer unless present detection methods are improved or new treatments for cancer customed. The biggest need now is for some simple test to spot cancer early, even In hidden, hard-to-find sites. This conference opening today will discuss the value of many proposed or possible methods of doing this. Right now detection centers can not be anything more than part of the answer of finding cancer early, society officials said. A thorough examination of one per son takes about an hour's time. Cancer authorities say that to play safa every person should have a checkup once a year. Men and women over 45 should have two a year. Not Enough Doctors But twice-a-year checkups for everyone would take the full work ing day of 195.000 doctors. The nation has about 180.000 practicing physicians. There are about 240 cancer de tection centers now. the society re ported. Most are booked up weeks or months in advance. Of all the people who come, about . 1 per cent are found to have can cer. About 10 per cent have con ditions that might turn into can cer and 57 per cent are found to have other diseases or troubles and are referred to their own physicians for treatment of these disorders. Employment Up Here Last Month; Future Uncertain Employment In Klamath county was back to normal during the ' month of August, although the fu-j tunc did not look too bright, an of- j flcial report from the Oregon stale employment service reveals. j -ll crews were working in all' timber mills and camps during the j month of August. ; Gloamlest side of the employment picture was in the construction field. The month at August showed build ing permits totaled only S4S52. Construction jobs are n earing completion. No additional hires are anticipated since they will be com pleted easily before bad weather sets in. Farm work has quieted since hay ing is practically over. Irrigation Is waning, and grain two-thirds har vested. The largest hire af agricultural workers should start about Septem ber IS. when potato harvest will get underway, wralher permitting. No prices for pickers or laborers have been quoted at this time. The unemployed rolls dropped about per cent lower than July, the present total being about MS. I Job placements have been up but a j steady Influx of workers keeps the; total unemployed at a high summer level The end of August showed but 23 Job openings.
