passing scene. The Joke Is otlen
on somebody else, but not always.
There waa the time, (or ex
ample, that Wea Ouderlan made
his (amous ride down Lincoln
street hill. We, our photographer,
had pushed a car (or a cold
start down the hill, and when
hi went to Jump In. he round the
door locked. He could reach the
steering wheel through the win
dow, and be drove the hell-bent
machine, with no foot control, as
It sped downhill. It went Into
the canal at the dead end of the
street after Wee had Jumped.
Wea returned to his home to nurse his wounds.
Meanwhile, somebody called me from feed to say
that a car was In the canal and we might want a
picture. So I called Wea. as Innocently as could be,
and asked him to get a shot ot its car some wild
man had put In the canal at the foot of Lincoln
au-eet. The sputtering on the telephone that fol
lowed that one can't be described In print, hut
Wea did get a picture of his own accident and we
used It that day. .
Some other of many amusing or unusual stories
that come to mind In a look-back over the yean:
The time tt rained fish at Algoma; the big fish that
dropped mysteriously out of the sky and dented a
car on High street near Sacred Heart church; the
doves which perched on the cross ou the Sacred
Heart tower on the eve of VJ day. really a memor
able symbolic Incident; the big ram In August. 141.
that filled the underpass for the first time: the
time (in the old. rough days) when a whiskey jug
broke on the special train going to the Bieber
golden spike ceremony and the boys strained out
the glass through a dirty towel, pouring the evil stuff
Into a washbasin and dipping It out by the cupsfuL

varied, all through the years!

It la not easy to break the associations ot II years.
The whole area, from ailchrlst to Allures, from

lonely ranch out near Abert rim boasts grand
people, srores of hom I have come to know at

Some of them have been here all the time I have

the news department I will remember them all with
kindness and Just a bit of nostalgia.
