I concluded my career. If such tt may be called,
as a radio commentator. The Managing Editor'! Re
port, mhlch started on tCFLW at
15 p. m. on April Fools Dy.

O'clock August 23. 1M. Possibly
1 was the only person who felt

As I looked past the micro
phone yesterday at Charlie across
the desk from me, it was hard
to realise thst at oue time that IP LEY
hunk of Iron and tin (the nuke, not Charlie) had
nearly frightened the wits out of me. making sweat
run down my face and causing a tightening In
my throat Long ago I had to get over that
else I certainly long ago would have been oft the
air. But even so. after three year. I never started
a program without Just a small rise of exctement.
It quickly passed, but It was always there.
: I was a grttzled old reporter, a writuV man.
when the ME report was Inaugurated. I started to
write out the whole thing, but soon found thst
consumed a big part of the day, and before long I
took to the ad-libbing that was the regular pro
cedure from then to the end. It probably produced
a pretty Jerky delivery, and there were plenty of
what the radio guys call -fluffs." but It msde It
easier. It was informal, and Its all over now
anyway.
A GOOD many amusing things happened on the
ME report. Once U. 8. Senator Ouy Cordon
was the guest for an Interview., I had recently
teen to a football game or something and when I
got Into the studio with the senator, my voice
failed me entirely. All I could do was emit a grat
ing whisper that must have sounded like the static
produced In a receiving set by lightning. I man
aged by sign language to convey Information on
my plight to Senator Cordon, who took over the
whole program and talked steadily for IS minutes.
He did a darned good Job of It, too.
- On another occasion Mrs. A. B. Wade, who does
the Janitor work here at night and Is one of the few
fans of this program, came to the window of the
studio and began gesticulating wildly. It seems
Che was listening at an office receiving set that
she dldnt know was turned down for volume, and
she thought I didnt know I was talking In a
whisper. In fact, I was talking at the usual level
and her gestures puzzled me to the point where
I became completely befuddled. I thought maybe
something had happened to some member' of my
family, or the place was on tire. My mind wandered
and my talk followed tt tar afield. It almost broke
tip the program. When I got off the air. several
people called up to express their regret that I was
soon to be led away by a man in a white uniform.
There's no sure way to tell whether anybody Is
listening to a radio program unless you make a
mistake that produces corrective calls. I've made
a lot of them, with gratifying results.
A SERIES that became a part of the ME report
for quite a while, and which Interested me
If nobody else, had to do with the history of
this region. I dubbed It "Five Minutes of History."
Once it was started, the obligation forced me to
do quite a lot of research Into the background of
the Klamath country that came in handy In other
ways and has added richness to living In this area.
I suggest that Klamath people who dont know
much of this story look Into It. It Is amazingly
Interesting. It will add glamour to every automobile
Jaunt you take: tt will help you Interpret local
news: It will help you evaluate modem-day social
and economic situations In your own community
and region.
For an example: Yesterday, the Modoc forest set
up a flre-fightlng headquarters camp at the base of
Olllem's bluff In the Lava Beds. The bluff was
named for Colonel Oillem of the first cavalry, who
took command of the field forces of the VS. army
after the Canny massacre In 1873, and devised the
successful strategy of surrounding the holed-up
Modoc Indians and forcing their surrender by siege,
rather than attempting the virtually impossible
task of driving them out of the Lava Beds as
then had tried to their sorrow. Olllem's men
camped at the spot where the fire-fighters set
themselves up yesterday, the familiar north entrance
to the Lava Beds monument. To me, there's a bit of
a thrill In that knowledge.
That's wandering a bit away from the ME report,
but this has probably gone far enouglt. anyhow. I've
described my experiences on the radio because I
started out with Just about the same preparation
and talent for the business as any run-of-the-mill
reader, whose experiences under similar conditions
might have been quite similar. It's been instructive
end It has been fun for me. I am thankful for
the opportunity, though It's quite plain the experi
ment failed to produce a sensational new figure
In the commentating business.

'HE difficulty about the Ober act in Maryland
and the Fein berg act In New York Is that
disloyalty is hard to establish in a free country.
Opposition Is not disloyalty. Was It disloyal to the
V lilted States for the democratic national committee
to establish a smear machine to malign the char
acter and destroy the political personality of
Herbert Hoover who was then actually president of
the United States? Was the opposition to Franklin
D. Roosevelt's policy of appeasement at Teheran and
Yalta disloyalty to the United States? Is the op
position to Harry Truman's bankrupting fair deal
the Inventions of such men as Leon Keyserling and
Oscar Ewing disloyalty to the United States?
The fact Is that opposition is essential to our
form of government which recognizes freedom of
debate and discussion. Therefore, the various left
wing elements, from the opportunistic ADA. to
the communists, feel that they are as loyal as
anyone else. The problem posed then is to define
loyalty, which. In a free society, is very difficult.
It used to be quite clear. It did not matter what
one thought or said or wrote: to provide disloyalty,
there had to be an overt act. something specific,
discernible and measurable. But how are we to
measure the corruption of young children In schools?
By what instruments are we to gauge the effects
of word and gesture on the young mind? For
Instance, if constantly, like water wearing a stone.
the idea is projected that patriotism Is an ugly j
vice, that only old fogies, reactionaries, fascists j
love their country but good and understanding i
people love the world how Is a patriotic generation
to be reared?
Or take, for instance, the constant projection of
the idea that man is an animal conditioned by
his environment and controlled solely by material,
accidental causes what does that do to the child's
concept of moral law upon which our civilization
may be destroyed by a challenging civilisation, if
the capacity of Its people to resist has been
destroyed.

IN opposition to the Feinberg act in New York
state, an act which forbids communists to teach
in our schools. Rose Russell, legislative representa
tive of the Teachers Union CXO, makes the point:
-Our citizens must protect their schools. Spe
cifically with regard to the Fr in berg law, we must
demand that the board of regents not follow the
un-American procedure of the attorney-general.
but provide due process safeguards for any or
ganization which It contemplates putting on a list
as 'subversive ...
"We must Insist on full encouragement for free
Inquiry for teacher and student ....
-Our schools are Indeed In danger. Not from
communists, or cenmun" whether broadly or
narrowly defined but from those who. In the guise
of combatting communism, are effectively smother
ing intellectual freedom and stifling education with
the very regimentation and totalitarianism' they
pretend to oppose."
This particular statement Is Identical with the
communist attitude toward our schools. In a word,
parents shall nave no voice In the education of
their children: the community shall have no voice
because the teacher must bo tree to do as she
pleases. What Is meant by "free inquiry In rela
tion to an elementary school teacher who Is hired
by the community to teach arithmetic, spelling,
reading, writing, something about this country?
Miss Russell says of teachers who are to be
fired under the Feinberg act:
-The six teachers whose Jobs are threatened by
the local witch-hunt have a total of more than 120
years of satisfactory and even superior service
Who is to decide whether their teaching has been
-satisfactory and even superior- the school au
thorities, the community, the parents?

warning and plea for collective se
curity. He became premier of
Prance In March, 1940, and In the
following black period had to an
nounce to his people In a succession
of broadcasts some of the greatest
reverses In their history.
Reynaud foresaw the Nazi ag
gression and urged preparedness,
but hi was a voice crying In the
wilderness. It was about that time,
while he was finance minister, that
I had a long talk with him In Par
is. We covered a lot of ground, and
at one point I asked him what he
thought of America's tendency to
confine Its activities to the western
hemisphere. He replied:
"There was a time when Eng
land thought she was an Island."
I wanted for more, and when It
didn't come I inquired If that waa

federal laws, the P B.I. has only
