afternoon. It waa not an adventure unless you can call flirting
with atr-slcknesa an adventure. It waa Just a routine news-picture
assignment.
The air seemed pretty smoky after we were well up over Klamath
Falls and headed southeast. It worried me Just a little for aerial
plcturea of forest fires are tough enough without a general smoke
base. After we rounded a high ridge on the way to Mt. Hebron, the
entire fir picture was laid be-

We were headed straight for the
middle of the fire. To the right in
a big billow waa the cap of smoke
that marked the main portion of
the newly-aroused blaze. To the
left was the already burnt over
area where still-smoking tree snags
could be seen leaving trails against
the blackened ground like Jet-propelled
airplanes. The burnt over
section must have comprised about
1000 acres, though I'm not much of
a Judge of area from the air.
We eogld sea the flames against
tbe smoke as we neared the main
portion af the fire, bat I told Chet
ta make a run by It before I waald
tart taking pictures. I wanted la
get a general idea af how tt look
ed before wasting film. The pan
gent odor af wood amok filled
the cabin of the plane now, and
then we were aver the homed ant
portion. We could are the fire
fighting eamp at the edge af the
barn, with trucks moving about,
kicking ap trails af dust.
We made a wide turn In the
mountain section southwest ot the
camp and headed back for the tire.
I tried kicking th door open to
take pictures, but the air pressure
waa too great and I finally gave up.
It was a good thing the pleil-glass
windows were clean for I had to
Uke all the pictures through them.
We had lost a little altitude In
my attempt to open the door, so
we had to turn again and try for
height, Th fir was too big to get
from a low altitude, and I was try
ing to silhouette Ih smoke against
the dark hills behind the fire. The
wind had changed and w could
no longer see the flames against
the smoke, so I waa a little doubt
ful about the outcome. The finish
ed print might look Just like a
grazy hate.
After taking the distant shots,
we dropped down lor a run down
the fire line. It waa an Inter
esting. If anphotographlr, exper
ience. Flamea could be seen
hooting akyward, and as we got
nearer the hot spot the plan
burked a little: aa Chet made ma
fasten my safely belt. I tried tak
ing a few close shot which were
no good and then we headed for
home.
It took an hour and ten minutes
to make the round trip over the
fire as compared with the four
hour Malcolm Epley Jr. and I had
spent on a gn und trip Into the
area Saturday night. And . . Oh.

of 74. celebrated his own 81st birth
day and his wife's 44th Saturday by
making his first parachute Jump.

As MacFadden stamped around
climbing out ot his parachute rig,
he exclaimed:

ball helmet, shin guards and Jump
