Bhep guarded the chlrken house
and Bnckr horn at all times, being
very much a ty-et-hoaw dog and
hardly ever leaving the premise of
hi master. In his younger days, he
as th playmate, and companion
of the two Engle boys, Weston and
Clifford, who had taught him to
ride uptown In th basket of their
bicycles, and It was always an amus
ing sight to see 8hep going by,
proudly perched on the bicycle.
Of later years, he ha been too
lam for much active exercise, ex
cept to help rounding up chickens
for butchering. This was the last
act of hi- long and useful life, as
on Sundsy morning last, with Shep't
help, the Engle had caught a num
ber of fryer and had then gone
In to breakfast. Th dog lay down
outside, and was discovered dead by

Salmon Caught
By New Method

Kenneth Dickey and BUlie
Klein caught a six-pound salmon by
a brand new method here.
They were fishing in Nehalem
bay when an eagle dropped toward
ahallow water, seized a salmon,
carried it to a sand spit, and began
to eat It
Th anglers drove the tagle
away and added the fish f their
bag.
They did not, however, enter It
In the current salmon derby a a
catch.
The small amount of steel made
In U. B. colonial days was used
mainly in bayonets, (words and
cutting tools.

The beloved old pet of the Engle
family was given a first-class burial
in a waterproof box as a final tri
bute by the Engle boys, both of
whom are now of course grown
up. Weston being employed at Wey
erhaeuser camp 11 and Clifford at
Crater Lake park.
The second dog whose death oc
curred this week did not meet a
quiet and peaceful end as did old
Shep. He was Bob, who had been
with the family of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Nosh for 13 years, being
a fine cattle dog as well as a faith
ful companion and watchdog of
the Noah home.
He was badly hurt when struck
by a passing motorist Just as he
was starting to cross the highway
to the Noah home from the opposite
field where he had been busy catch
ing mice. Just aa he came to th
highway, a speeding car struck him
down, the driver not even stoppint
after hitting the dog. Bob lived four
hours before he succumbed to his
Injuries. It ha often been said that
a man's best friend Is his dog, and
this has been demonstrated and
proved many times. Old Shep and
Bob will be missed for a long time
by their masters.
Another local case Involving a
dog was that of Spike, pet of little
(-year-old Douglas Van Wormer,
but this story has a happy ending.
On Thursday evening, the Uttle
animal became lost on Sun moun
tain and could not be found. No
trac of him wa found the next
day when Dougla and his mother
went to look for him. Having been
told that on should leave some
article of the dog owner clothing
or belongings near the place where
he had been lost and he would nay
with it should he find It, Mr. and
Mrs. Van Wormer left a blanket
from th car at th place on th
summit of the mountain where
Spike had been lost, although they
wer frankly very skeptical a to
th outcome, doing so only at th
Insistence of little Dougla.
However, on going back there
Saturday morning, they found to
their surprise and Joy their little
pet lying on the blanket they had
left there behind some tree. He
had found hi way back to the
place where had been lost, found
the blanket and remained there, no
doubt hoping and trusting someone
would come and take him home.
After two nights and a day spent
In the woods. Spike wa a very tired,
hungry and thirsty little animal,
being too exhausted to do more
than wag hi tall weakly at the
light of his owners. He was Immedi
ately brought home and cared for
by hi little muter, who had been
broken-hearted at th loss of his
dog. hi playmate and ever-present
dally companion, but who I now
happy again with the finding of hi
pet.
