Bright Siars In
Skies Interest
By J. HUGH PBL'ETT
Many Inquiries lately have been
received regarding two brilliant
light reported shining Uke little
lanterns from opposite walls of Uie
blue dome of Uie twUight skies. The
one In the west seemingly ha even
brought apprehension to Uie minds
ot a few. A newspaper man recent
ly climbed to the roof of a high
office building to determine the
reason for some excited telephone
calls. But he could locate nothing.
for the disturbing object had by
that time silently slipped beneath
Uie western skyline.
These evening brilliancies are
not terrestrial d Unisys of aerial
achievement, either hostile or
friendly, but belong entirely In Uie
realm of Uie celestial. Nor are they
supernatural, for they obey natural
law perfectly. Their positions at
any given hour tonight could have
been calculated with precision 100
year ago by mathematical as
tronomers. What then are they?
Our faithful ancient friends. Uie
planet Venus and Jupiter, other
world of our own solar system
which every so often return to
beautify our evening skies for sev
eral months.
These planets are by far the
brightest of any of Uie star-like ob
jects In Uie heavens. Venus, which
can be sighted fairly low In the
west within about half an hour af
ter sunset, will continue to Increase
In luminosity during Uie rest of Uie
year, and by late December will be
a-i uuic. ?
a gorgeous Christmas star. One
must look early for Venus for It
set about IS hours after Uie sun.
Jupiter rises in Uie southeast at
!LU2. .JJS. 'uS.U!l?!Uned with booth of merchandise,
moves westward always low In Uie
sky. By 11 .Jn. standard time (mid
night DST) It Is In Uie south, and
four hours later, sets in the south
west. August is Uie Ume when the mrs
terious band of Uie Milky Way
shows at its best a it spans Uie
evening sky from north to south.
After Uie 15th the moon wiU not
rise until late, then when twilight
has faded from Uie heavens and Uie
observer Is away from bright
city lights, this faint white glow ot
Uie galaxy la revealed. This is ac
tually a vast collection ot distant
stars, so remote that they cannot
be detected individuaUy.
August Is siso Uie month for the
Perseid meteors, known as the
Tear of St. Lawrence. They are
at their best from August 10 to 13,
when 70 or 80 per hour may some
times be counted providing Uie say
la dark, clear and moonless. But
gery. Adele Brown Is working for
Mrs. Oivan.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pro ugh and
