IB Surveys Save Many
By EDWIN P. JORDAN, M.D.
Written for NEA llervlre
The treat white plague, or tuber
culosis as It Is more commonly
known today. Is an Infectious dis
ease. The germ which causes It Is
most commonly caught from a per
son with the disease, although II csn
be carried also by unpasteurized
milk or contaminated meat.
The best line of attack Is to pre
vent the spread of the germ. One of
the best wsys to attack this problem
la to survey the entire population of
a community or city with the aim
of picking out those who have the
disease but do not even know It
People who do not even know they
hsve tuberculosis may Infect others.
The community survey has now be
come possible because of revolution
ary Improvements In the technical
methods of dlsgnosing tuberculosis.
This technical Improvement Involves
the use of a Unj or miniature X-ray
film.
Big-City Esperlment
Probably Savannah, Oa , waa one
of the first large clues to try this
method out on a lane scale. The
county tn which Savannah la located
has a copulation of 140,000. During
the autumn of IMS. nearly TS.ooo
residents of the county appeared
voluntarily for cheit X-rays.
Since that time several outer cities
Including Washington. D. C. Seat
tle. Wash- and Cleveland. Ohio nn
which such a survey la now In prog
ress', have carried out simllsr X-rsy
surveys aimed at revealing unsus
pected cases of the dlaeave.
Mass tuberculosis surveys offer s
wonderful means of picking out un
known tuberculosis land often
equelly unknown other diseases of
the chest i. This permits many thou
sands to obtain proper treatment
early enough to bring about a cure
