North Santiam Highway To
Be Opened After Oiling;
But No Definite Date Set

new Niagara-Detroit section of thi
North Santlam highway will be
opened to traffic ftlter It In oiled

uncertain today.

roads, and varloua delegations at
the commission meeting yesterday.
The logging railroad In that area
had been slated for abandonment
August 11, If the highway la ready.

formally ended their armed con
flict today and Issued cease-fire
order to local military commanders
In Java and Sumatra.
The cease-fire proclamation la to
become effective In Java at mid
night local time next Wednesday,
Aug. 10, and In Sumatra at mid
night Sunday, August 14.
The long-sought agreement la
expected to put an end to the
fighting that first broke out In
1M5 when Indonesian republicans,
liberated from Japanese occupation,
sought Independence from Dutch
rule.
Fighting flared anew last De
cember when Dutch troopa crushed
the Indonesian republican govern
ment at Jogjakarta and interned
many of it leaden in a self-styled
police action. Premier Mohamed
Hatta and other republican chiefs
were released last month and the
republican government waa re-1
established during peace segoua-j
lions.

The buresu of public roads, build
ing the highway, proposed opening
the road now, with rock-spreading
to start In six weeks in preparation
for the final surfacing next sesson.
Some lumbermen, however, com
plained that the unolled road would
be too dusty for safety, and the
highway commission announced It
would not open the road until
smoothing and oiling is done.
The commission offered help of
It equipment to the bureau of
public roads In getting the oiling
done a soon as possible perhaps
by August IS.
A coin toss decided which of two
Jackson county bridges would be
rebuilt by the state, and which by
the county. The county, which won
the toss, decided to do the work
on the Rogue river bridge. That
gave the state the Bvbee bridge.

river bridge at Salem was postponed
; until the Salem city council talces
the first steps,

tion on a $184 000 construction and

tiam highway through Sweet Home
until the city provide the right of
way.

family of John Harrison Tracy. 78-year-old
Estacada man who van
ished near Mount Hood a week ago,
continued a discouraged search to
day. Most of the large posse had ceased
hunting, thinking It futile.
"It's hard to give him up," aald

the missing man. Tracy's car was
