During periods of war. scabies
lot, as it Is commonly called, the
j seven-year itch, tends to increase.
This disease Is caused by an insect
I aarcoptes scabiei which burrows
: Into the skin causing terrific itching
and Irritation.
The disease is more common in
the colder months, perhaps because
bathing is less common. In the typi
cal case the itching is worse at
night than during the daytime. Al
though scabies Is more frequent
among those people who do not
practice personal cleanliness. It Is
by no means confined to such Indi
viduals. PREVENTION IMPORTANT
Scabies is acquired from someone
else who harbors the insect which
causes It. Consequently avoidance of
contact with those who might be
involved is the best method of pre-
' ten Hon. Since the disease tends to
involve families or communities, it
is important to treat all of those
w ho may have the disease and not
Just the one who happens to seek
the doctor's help.
Not only should possible contacts
be sought out and carefully ex
amined for the disease, but bedding,
u-wels, clothing and other articles
which touch the skin should be
treated, usually by healing.
Many good treatments, some new,
some old, are available. Various
sulphur preparations have been re
cognised for years as valuable for
this disease. In addition, there have
been a number of new good treat
ments proposed including DDT. a
chemical called bensobensoate,
rotenor.e, pyrethrum. and others.
Most of these substances, how
ever, ran produce secondary irrita
tion of the skin or other compll
etuons. so that their use except un
der observation of a physician is
not advised.
Note: Dr. Jordan Is unable to
answer individual questions from
readers. However, each day he will
answer one of the most frequently
asked questions In his column.
