PEACH ROOTS give wild plum budding stock speedier growth.
The peach root is cut bock to just above the ground where
the wild plum slip is budded on. All growth below the plum
shoot will be pinched off to save all the energy for the plum
tree.

An Increasing taatr1 among Klam
ath county rraidrnta and anyonr
who has rvrr lived here, for wild
plum preserves, la piumptlng some
forraighlrd ranchers to drvrlop wild
plum groves on their land.
Chrt Barton. Pne vallry rancher
planted 100 small plum trrra last
year but some of Uiem suffered from
the past severe winter.
The M0 Utile trees plsnted by
W. W. Southwell on his Henley
rsnch this year are doing fine and
hav put forth bountiful new
growth. Cultivated wild plums arr
tuned from budding stock obtained
through Orrgon State college from
the brat of the wild stork In Klam
ath and Lake rountirs. It la budded
onto peach roots and rxperimenta
prove that the Uate of the domesti
cated spectra la no different frorj
the wild varieties.
Peach mots are recommended
ovrr the original plum roots for
their sturdit.eas and fast growing
qualities. Trot made by OHC flrld
men In bi-annual atudlea In the wild
groves show 10 varieties of the wild
plums or "prunus suboordata."
If only one species is plsnted In
1 grove thr trees will not reproduce.
Southwell has sis vsnetiea among
his M0 plants.
An advantagr of domesticating
the plums la to have them where
they can be protected from or
dinary haurds of thr wood, gophrra
and porcupines rating thr tender
young ahoota and aphida attacking
the trrra later on. Between frosts j
at blossom time this year, followed I
by heavy aphid Infestation, thr :
yield of wild plum groves is expected i
to be way below normal this fall. '
The OHC flrld men arr expected to
be In Klamath and Lake countien
thla month, making a routine check I
and will have a more definite fore-'
cast on the crop when the tour n
completed. !
Trees In ranch orchards are re-!
moved from marginal lands which 1
support damaging animals, and are 1
aourcrs of aphid sprrad. Thry can
be sprayed for disease and Irrigated
through dry seasons. I
