United Btatea chamber of commerce
Monday called on labor to forego
a fourth round of wage Increases
and on business to lower prices as
rapidly as possible.
Herman W. Bietnkraus. president
of the chamber. Issued a statement
replying to the recent report drafted
by Economist Robert R. Nathan for
the CIO. Nathan aald higher wages,
paid out of present-day high
profits, would bolster the economy
by Increasing purchasing power.
Ktelnkraus replied:
Prosperity cannot be coaxed back
by forcing higher wages, and It
seems a very poor time to put such
