Uly Loper left last Wednesday
evening to visit her grandparents in
Redmond. Wash. She will be away

SPOKANE. July 19 Upy A con
ference of scientists at the Han
ford works this week will Include
Dr. Karl T. Compton. chairman of
the United States research and
development committee.
Dr. Compton Is the former presi
dent of Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and I the brother of
Dr. Wilson Compton. president of
Washington Bute college.
Members of the group to be
headed by Compton are scheduled
for a tour of the atomic energy
plant on Wednesday and an all
day conference Thursday. ,

ROME. July 1 OPi The curi
osity of a saloon waiter caused
the arrest of an Italian counter
feit ring dealing In millions.
Police said the waiter opened a
package that had been left In the
bar to be picked up and found
million of lire. The police were
warned and arrested the man who
came to pick up the package.
They then found the "mint" in
a cave near Rome, where they
seized 250.000.000 lire (about 400.
000) In counterfeit note. Nine
persons wer arrested.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wood left
this week-end for a two-week vaca
tion tr.p to Camas. Wash, accom
panied by his grandparents. Mr. and
Mrs. Claude Wood of Camas, who
have been visiting here at the Wood
home. Marsha and Janice, small
daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Wood,
were left in the care of their grand
mother. Mrs. Glen Wood, at Che
mult, during their trip and visit.
Wood Is employed on the local
patrol of the Oregon state highway
department, and hi father. Glen
Wood, is foreman of the Chemult
division.
