THE DOCTOR SAYS
'Blue Baby' Cause Told
By F.DWIV P. JORDA.V, M. D.
Wltttea for NEA 8ervle
The common name "blue baby"
is given to infants who are corn
with a bluish color to the skin. This
bluish color, called cyanosis, is
caused by lack of oxygen In the
hemoglobin, or coloring matter, of
the blood. In blue babies the de
ficiency of oxygen is the result of
a malformed heart or of the large
blood vessel near It. Such defec
tive structures permit the blood
from the vein, containing only a
little oxygen, to mix with the
oxygen-laden blood from the ar
teries. There are several kinds of mal
formation of th heart which will
permit this mixing of oxygen
containing and non-oxygen con
taining blood. The various kinds
ar too numerous snd too compli
cated to deacrlb In detail. But It
doe make a difference to the pa
tient because some kinds can now
be successfully treated by surgery
and other cannot.
blRGERI I'SED
In on treatable form, the pss-
ssgewsy between th heart and one
of the large blood vessels which
should normally close before birth
fil to do so. This Is called a
patent or open ductus artenosius
This opening can now be closed by
delicate heart surgery. The opera
Lion hss already been done hun
dred of time with great success.
Some of the other congenital mal
formations of the heart can lso be
treated successfully by surgery, but
not all of them. Por this reason
careful study of each case has to be
conducted Individually In order to
make a diagnosis snd decide whether
or not surgery wouk. be useful.
Por the blue Infant or child who
cannot be successfully treated by
surgery certain precaution ar
