Over the week-end the local club
leveled on the second-place Pitts
burg Diamonds lor a pair ot vic
tories at Gems stadium. 30-3 Satur
day night and 3-3 Sunday afternoon,
and going Into the final game of the
aeries tonight the club's league lead
Is two and a hall games.
All the artillery was dragged up
for the Saturday engagement, a 3J
hlt barrage that included homers by
Morrle Nordell. BUI Reese and Stau
Oilson. Nordell's came on the first
pitch In the bottom of the first In
ning: Reese's with the bases full In
the sixth and Gilson s with one on
in the seventh.
The cannonading drove Pitcher
Bob Stevens off the hill in the fifth
Inning and four other Diamond
hurlers came in for part of It. Stev
ens was the loser there and by an
unfortunate break ho also got the
blame for the Sunday setback.
HEAVY AT BAT
Oilson went all the way Saturday
M4ht to gain his fifth victory and
collected four singles In addition to
the homer in six bats. Oilson drove
In six runs.
Tom Lucido was the heavy hitter
for Pittsburg with a two-run homer
and a double in four times up.
Sunday afternoon's game was less
spectacular and a whole lot closer.
Both teams scored twice In the first
frame and then went scoreless until
Pittsburg pu-vhed across a run in the
fifth and another In the sixth to
take a 4-2 lead.
Pete Hernandex, tossing for the
Diamonds, weakened a lit Lie in Ihs
seventh to give up consecutive
singles to Bob Casselli. Gordon
Hernandex and Butch Paller good
for one run. In the eighth the Gems
scored twice on a walk, two singles
and an infield bouncer to take a 4-4
lead.
But the Diamonds weren't quite
ready to call it quits. Singles by
Tony FUlippo and Vince DiMaggio
and a walk to Bill Bios filled the
bases with two out In the top ot the
ninth and Bill Reese lost a low
throw from third base on what would
have been the third out. Pillippo
scored and the Diamonds had a
4-5 tie.
STEVENS SHAKY
In getting that rally started. Pitts
burg had retired Pete Hernandex is
favor ot a pinch hitter, so Stevens
took the mound to face the Gems in
the last of the ninth. Jack Buick
opened with a double down the
right field line, took third on a
passed ball and romped home with
the winning run when another ot
Stevens' pitches eluded Catcher
Tom Lucido.
Johnny Lopeman gained his 10th
victory of the season, going all the
way. The win was Klamath's
eighth in a row.
Ed Whitney, Klamath Falls boy
performing In Pittsburg livery,
turned In excellent work at first
base in both games but batted seven
times without a hit.

To Second In Six-Day Splurge

The Sacramento Solons are the
newest sensation in the Pacific
Coast league, and the big quesuon
today is: Where did they come
from?
Nobody is sure exactly, but six
days ago and about 20 Burma Shave
signs out of Seattle the Solons were
somewhere in the vicinity of fifth
place. Today (Monday Sacramento

They arrived Sunday by taking
both ends of a double header with
Seattle, to and 3 to 2. The
Solons swept the six game series
from the Rainiers, who now have
lost nice in a row.
The shutout belonged to Kenny
Holoombe. who. like Tom Rose in
the second game, twirled six hit
bail.
And what of Seattle? The Rain
iers" two week home stand was their
most disastrous in years. They won
only three out of 15 games. Drop
ping 11 of their last 12 start
Seattle's skid is reminiscent of last
year when a mid-season drive car
ried the Rainiers within one game
of the top before they cooled on.

The Northern California baseball
league took an entirely different
view of things yesterday as the two
league-leading teams nosedived be
fore lower opposition.
The Klamath Falls Pioneers were
held to Just five hits as the McCloud
Loggers won 15-2 behind the pitch
ing of Chet Ath. Pat Williams was
tabbed with the defeat. The Loggers
accumulated 20 base hits.
Dunsmulr ran afoul of the fast
coming Hilt nine and got blanked
7-0 on six hits. Dunsmulr and
Klamath Falls still lead the Sunday
ball circuit but Hilt and Yreka are
gaining fast.
Yreka defeated luckless Shasta
Dam 7-1 and Weed clubbed Mt.
Shasta 18-9.

annual Pacific Northwest Golf asso

men and 130 women scheduled to

tomorrow and sting into match
play Wednesday. The Utle match
will be played Saturday.
Over the meek-end. Pacific North
west amateur golfers scored a 9-to-3
victory over a California all-star
group In the first annual Morse Cup
matches.
A major factor in the triumph
was the stellar play of Jack West
land. Everett, Wash, and Harry

Westiand beat Bruce McCormlck,
Los Angeles, 4 and 2: Campbell de
feated Ed Lowery. San Francisco.

yachtsmen who completed the
course with 1 per cent of their pre
dicted time. Ninety-four yachts
entered and all but one. the Fusilier,
