Wheat Stages Strong Gains
CHICAOO. July 6 ( With July wheat rolling abort U In l broad
buying movement, the bread cereal gave a how ol first class power on
the board of trade today.
Oaina ranged to more than S cents at times. July wheat made a
new high since early February, before the sharp price break during
that month. Other cereals also showed strength, but did not match
the wheat gains.
Trading was extremely active. The nurket had to absorb a good
deal of hedging pressure, which It did with ease. Pit brokers' shirts
were wet with perspiration despite the board's air-cooling system.
The big buying came from mills. It was brought about by an ag
gressive demand lor flour from bakers. The bakers have been buying
flour on a hand-to-mouth basis for months, but yesterday and today
they Jumped Into the market with orders for delivery as far away as
130 days and as the mills booked flour business with bakers, the mills
came into the wheat pit and removed hedges they had placed In the
market earlier when they had acquired cash wheat.
The market was helped along by more pessimistic crop reports.
Wheat closed 4-57 higher. July gS.OIU-S. corn was higher.
July $1J7S-S. oats were S-1S higher. July 63 '--'. rye was 3 to 4
cents higher. July 81 42. soybeans were 1-5V, higher. July 83S3a.-li.
and lard was i to 1 cents a hundred pounds lower. July JlO.iS.
