Today's Roundup
By MALCOLM EPLKT
NOW comes the annual presentation of tha Klsm
alh Buln Roundup. The how that til bo

Bunday and Monday, la the prod
uct of the Klamath Sheriff!
Pome, which Uila year took on
thia heavy community responsi
bility. Klamathi roundups have al
ways been food. So far aa arena
action Is concerned, they have
sucked up with the beat of them
anywhere. They have fallen short.
If anywhere, tn pageantry and
special features the kind of
thing Pendleton gets from its In
dian participation, for Instance.
This year, there should be no
lack of special feature. The man- EPLF.Y
element has lined up more than usual entertain
ment acta of hit h calibre as relief from rough and
tumble arena action.
It should be a good show and It should draw a
good crowd.
. . a
THERE Is more to thia sort of thing than Just
throwing a show that will attract people to
town and get them to spend their money here.
Klamath, as the big town of a big area, owes a
responsibility to that area to offer It special enter
tainment with something of the big time about It
and spiced with glamour.
People from the 300-mile radius east, south and
north want to get In the family gas buggy and
"n.
go to town once tn a while. And when they get
there, they want to see something different that
makes (he trip woith while as a change from worka
day routine. Klnmath haa to live up to that expectation.
The same Idea Influenced remarks here last winter
about the lack of Christmas decorations. Klamath
Just vesnt doing Its Job. But I understand that
steps hare already been taken to handle that project
the coming Christmas season.

DISILLUSIONMENT note: The Whiftenpoof song,
a haunting melody that makes one dream of
deeds of heroism and sacrifice. Isn't based on any
thing like that at all . . . It's Just a bunch of the

Marvin Klemme. formerly with the grating service
In this area. Is author of a new book, "The Inside
story of the I'NRRA". soon to be off the presses
of a New York publishing house . . , Klemme
spent two years with I'NRRA ... He once ran
for second district congressman OOP nomination
against Lowell Stockman, lost In the primary, and
thereafter directed StocLnian's campaign . . . Leo
Huls. who spent a night In the woods on a recent
fishing trip, says the worst tiling about It all was a
skunk that kept sneaking up on him . . , The skunk
wanted the fish Huts had In his basket . . . After
spending the night fighting the skunk and several
mosquitoes, Huls got up and made his way to camp,
none the worse for wear ... He wants everybody
who worried about him to know that he appreciates
their concern.
Thia columnist Is going to Southern California
this week-end. and of course will take the Inside
route via Reno and Bishop ... If a typewriter Is
handy, there II be reports here about w hat happens
along the way . . For some reason. thr- travel
ogues seem to be popular . . . Must be the yen to
hit the open road that pervades the soul of man
kind . . . Anyway, I've never thought my travels
were any more Interesting than those of other people
f Just happen to have a Job of writing to do
and the travel pieces are easy to turn out . . .
The reader Interest indicated Is always gratifying
... In 196. when I made an auto trip to New York
and back, the late Henry Anderson kept a map
record of the entire Journey ... He showed It to
me when I got home and he knew more about my
trip than I did.
