day night from her second year at
the university of Oregon.
Mr. and Mra. Leroy Olenger and
daughter, Norma Lee, arrived In
Chiloquin on Saturday night after
driving west from Chicago and
Evansion. 111., where Norma Lee
was graduated from Northwestern
university last Monday. They fol
lowed V. B. No. 3. a northern route
to Qlacier National park and then
cut south, driving some 700 mll?

brought with them a house guest.

Norma Lee's from Illinois.

attending tha Methodist ministers'
conference in Ashland during the

The swimming program for
children In the local community
will begin licit week, with sufficient
registration to warrant tending two
bus losds each week. The first
children who registered will go on
Mondays, meeting at 1 1 30 a. m.
at Uopeland yards. They should
hava had their lunch already and
will reach Oil in time to begin
classes at 1:30 p. m. The Oil
schedule Is a three-hour one, so the
bus will be resdy lo return to Chilo
quin by 4:30 p. m. Those who have
rrglatored later will follow the same
schedule but will make the trip on
Thursdays rather than on Mon
days. Mrs. Karl Hsll Is tha local

By City Club

of a change In divorce laws and
mora family counseling for marital-ly-entangied
people waa recom
mended by tha City club here.
Tha club adopted a recommenda
tion of Its research committee, over
bitter protests from several mem
oera who contended Christian tenets
wera being violated.
Tha club voted down a motion by
tha Rev. Walter J. Knutaon, Lu
theran minister, who had proposed
that the committee reconsider Its
report and "go back to tha laws of
Ood."
The long recommendation Includ
ed such suggestions aa:
1. Waiting period of 30 days be
tween the filing of a declaration to
divorce and actual filing of a com
plaint. 1 establishment of a family
counseling service In Multnomah
county as an arm of the divorce
curt.
1 A proposal that the club study
a "family court" which would han
dle marital problems. It waa this
proposal, which Indirectly men
tioned such things aa birth control,
that gave rise to the religious argument.

want to get beat up for not paying

grade al St. Clair school, Cleveland.

But things look a lot brighter now.
That s because Donald Is helping po
lice break up a Juvenile "ahake
down" racket at his school, a situa
tion that began with the visit of
to Juvenile bureau policemen to
Donald s home.
Their visit came siter Donald
balked at attending cuusea, and
after a truant officer talked with
the boy's father.
The truant officer thought Don
ald might be a victim of a "protec
tion" plot, which flared recently at
the school. The father had a man-to-man
talk with Donald, and the
lad's story came tumbling out:
"There are these two bigger boys
In my room. When teacher leaves
the room for a minute they come
over and say I better give them a
nickel or they il beat me up."
It first happened on a Monday,

the boy told his dad. He bought
another five cents' worth of protec
tion two days later, gave up a
nickel Thursday, had no more
money to pay on Friday. The two
boys, he told his dad. promised hint
a beating on the following Monday
If he didnt pay hla way out of It.
So he dldnt go to school.
His father, who has some strong
feeling about Juveniles In the shake
down racket, didn't compel his son
to go to schooL Instead, he called
police, and Donald repeated his story
to the Juvenile bureau. He promised
gladly to help break up the racket.
"We get a lot of these reports of
the protection racket In schools,"
said Capt. Arthur Roth, head of the
bureau. "It cornea In spells, trough.
It's cropping up again, now that
school Is si moat out. What causes It
The movies would be my guess."
