SPOKANE, Jun. 10 M" The
Bpokesman-Rcvlow laid In an edi
torial today that It "must acknowl
edge the distinction accorded It" by
President Truman, who aald here
yesterday that the Chicago Tribune
and the Spokesman-Review were
"the worst In the United Slates."
Describing the president's visit to
Spokane aa "a pleasant Interlude
and a compliment to the city," the
paper added:
"He described Oils newspaper as
one of the two 'worst' in the nation
and credited them with responsibil
ity lor the election of the present
congress. The Spokesman-Review
can only dismiss the first charge
as having been made in a moment
of heated partisanship and Inter
pret the second one as a tribute to

the newspaper's influence, albiet,
we fear, at least in part undeserved.
"The personal visit of the pres.
Ident, both In his role of chief
executive and as a political candi
date, was appreciated by Spokane.
The welcome mat was out this time,
just as It will be the next."
The paper carried a banner story
on the front page under the head
line "Truman Blames Two News
papers for "Worst U. 8. Congress."
The lead story carried the byline of
Rhea Felknor, reporter who was
questioning the president when the
"worst paper" charges were made.
Well Known
Matron Dies
Mrs. Stanford Rugg, 47. Ashland
matron who was well known here,
died at the Community hospital in
the valley city June J. Death was
attributed to a heart attack.
Mrs. Rugg was born in Smith
county, Kansas. March 17. 1901, the
former Mildred Rae Staub. She
came to Oregon with her family in
1911. married December 24 1935. to
Stanford Rugg. She Is survived by
her husband, five brothers and two
sisters, including John Stnub and
Mrs. Gertrude Stivers of Klamath
Falls and Lee Staub of Bly.
Services will be held Friday at 3
p. m. from the chapel of Ltlviller
and Negent. Ashland, with Rev. A.
Crowd Sees
Band Drill
More than 1000 persons gathered
at Modoo field Wednesday night to
hear the concert which the Klam
ath Union high school band will
present at the big band Jamboree
next Friday night In Multnomah
stadium as one of the highlights of
the Rose Festival.
The concert was dress rehearsal
tor the band and featured soloists
Catherine Blanas, Wllbert Elliott
and Gerald Fales. Andrew Loney
Jr., directed and Included several
other band numbers to entertain
the highly enthusiastic crowd. The
program which the KUHS band will
give In Portland Is only 13 minutes
long as a number of other bands
from Oregon and Washington are
also Included In the jamboree.
Members of the band with the
soloists and rhaperoues left at 6:30
a. m. by bus for Portland and they
will be housed at Hill Military
academy. The band marches In the
big floral parade this week-end, re
turning here Sunday.
G. Stewart of the Pre Methodist
church officiating. Burial will be
In Mountain View cemetery, Ash
land.
