new dams, never retire or repay
these, nnd may compel rate payers
to pay Interest on them Indefinitely."

permit firms such as the Idaho :
Power company to delay construc
tion of the proposed Hell's Canyon
dam on the Bnuke. He said this
would "keep public power out ot
Eastern Oregon." He said the Idaho
firm planned a small dam at Oxbow
Instead of the Hell's canyon project.
Tompkins urged Willamette valley
projects for Irrigation and flood
control benefits, protested dumping
of raw sewage In the Willamette
and asked supjxjrt of a timber sev
erance tax of 25 cents a thousand
feet for reforestation and state ad
visory aid for each county.

For June Roster

announced today that all navy
schools listed under the navy's hiKh
school graduate training program
are wide open for the month ol
June.
In this program a hluh school
graduate may select school be
fore he enlists. Marsh advises young
men to get their names in early as
tills program may not remain open
long.

training system is available in the
recruiting office, post office building.

Stumps long considered useless are
now being made into spruce veneer
here.
Stumps, cut Into blocks, are pro
ducing 3000 feet of wood a day for
the Uplegrove Lumber company 8
per cent ot Its dally cut.
A seaside logger. Ben Olson, tried
harvesting the stumps as an experi
ment project. He cuts two or four
blocks from each stump, hotsu the
blocks with a tractor, and brings
them in to the mill.
Stumps as old as eight yean stlU
produce usable wood, he said.
