To Be Counted
ALTURAS. Jue 7 Absentee bal
lots In the primary election were
to be opened here this afternoon,
but the county clerk's office indi
cated there was virtually no chance
they would change the outcome of
elections.
Most of the absentees are In the
fourth supervisor district, where
Charles Fitzpatrlck and John O.
Cummings hold votes of 531 and
218 respectively. Third man is Dr.
E. F. Auble. incumbent, with 123
votes. Whether Fitzpatrlck or Cum
mings holds the lead will be de
cided by absentees, but both are
nominated and will run It oft in
the fall.
In the first district. Paul Robin
son has been elected over Harvey
Darst by Just four votes, but there
are no absentee ballots. In the
third district. George Perkins, In
cumbent, and Larry Smith, have
been nominated, with little chance
of change, with only two absentee
ballots.
Lewis Blasts
Operators
WASHINGTON, June 7 WP)
John L. Lewis opened soft co-
contract talks today with a blast
of denunciation at the operators.
He called them "fat cats x x x
magnificently opulent x x x digging
deep and without restraint into
the national purse."
He made two points clear about
any agreement replacing the con
tract expiring June 30:
1. The United Mine Workers have
no wage proposals, but they "expect
Improvements."
2. They want guarantees under
the 1947 miners' welfare fund which
has paid out nothing because lt Is
tied up In a legal dispute.
He put the next move up to the
operators. The miners will con
sider any offer "which you may
persuade yourselves to utter," Lewis
said.
This was In a statement with
which Lewis opened the negotia
tions.
He scornfully told the operators
they had reduced collective bar
gaining "to mockery."

Detective
Opens Office.
Mel Lombard, recently of Port
land, has opened a private detective
office in Klumath Falls at 208 Un
derwood building. Lombard dis
posed of his Interest in the DuUois
Detective agency at Portland before
coming here.
The ex-Portlander said that he
was surprised to learn there was
no private detective agency in au
area as large as this. Explaining
the nature ot his work, he said he
cooperated and works with regular
police authorities, but that most of
the cases in which his agency works
do not involve the police.
Lombard said that the most com
mon cases handled by a private
detective include location of missing
persons, proving or disproving sus
picions in domestic cases, proving
fitness or unfitness for retaining
custody of children, apprehension of
shoplifters, checking on honesty or
dishonesty of employes, and so on.
Lombard said he would even find a
place for a person to live.
Two Children
Hurt In Wreck
Two children were htupltnllard
Sunday afternoon following a two
car crush at a crossroads In front
of the Midland grange hull.
The two girls, aged six and three,
were said to be only slightly In
jured, but were kept for observa
tion and x-rays at Hillside hospital.
The accident occurred at about
8:15 p. m., when a sedan operated
by Jumps Melvln Day, 3301 Derby,
and a second sedan operated by Or
vllle Miles, 301 Nevada, were enter
ing the Intersection, Day enstuound
and Miles southbound.
Bints police said that apparently
neither driver was aware ot the
other, and they collided almost In
the center of the Intersection.
Day's two daughters, Carolyn and
Hilda, were moved to the hospital
by a passing motorist. Carolyn, 6.
remained In Hillside tor treatment
of a back Injury but Linda was dis
missed. Both cars were considerably dam.
aged. No arrests were made.
