Pacific Coast Livestock
Prices On Way Up Again
After nnUHiiiK lKt week, livestock
mid meat prices on the Pacific Coast
advanced annln this week. Steers
topped on the Portland market at
t:it a cwt. this week, 60 cents over
lat week. Medium steers and good
cows were also up 60 cents while
venters were down SI 00 to .t.uu.
Most other clas.se of cattle were
unchanged. Receipts at North Port
land this week included some
locker cows and calves flooded
from Wands In the Columbia river.
but the total number of cattle ana
calves arriving was under last week.
Receipts at Mid-western markets
were a little larger this week but
about one-sixth below last year.
Steers at Chicago on Monday of
this week were 50 cents to S1.00
under last week's high, but
strengthened as the week progressed
to reach a new extreme top of S35.50
on Wednesday.

"The time for controlling weeds
with chemicals will soon be here.
Some selective spraying in fall
planted grain has already been
done in the county this year. 2.4-D
when used as a selective herbicide
may be expected to give good re
sults In controlling most broad
leafed annual plants and tap rat
ed perennial plants.
The chemical may be used to
control weeds In barley, wheat, oats,
grass seed fields, grass pastures and
turf areas. Including lawns. Crops
such as alfalfa, clover, beets, onions
and peas should not be treated
with 2.4-D because they are sus
ceptible to the chemical.
With something over 122.000 acres
of grain in the Klamath basin last
year, and an increased acreage this
year, this will mean a lot of selec
tive weed control work, even if only
a fraction of it is sprayed. For the
use of 2.4-D as a selective weed
control material, the dosage will
Tary from less than H to l1: pounds
of acid equivalent per acre, depend
ing on conditions and on the kind
of weed. The lower rates are usual
ly used on grain for control of
young, annual broadleaf plants. The
higher rates, up to 1 1 j pounds of the
cald equivalent, will be used on es
tablished grass plantings or on
grain for control of perennial weeds
or hard to kill annuals.
The time to apply 2.4-D as a se
lective spray will depend on the
stage of growth of both the weed
and the crop. Generally, the young
er the weed the more effective the
treatment. Grain may be treated
when it is 6 to 8 Inches high or when
U begins to stool. In any event, it
should be treated before it emerges
from the boot. Since Injury to
grain or grass is always a possibil
ity, the correct amount of 2.4-D
must be applied. It cannot safely
be reasoned that because a little
2.4-D does some good, more of it
should be better. Too heavy an ap
plication will not necessarily in
crease the yield over untreated
fields.
Hudson bay connects the Arctic
ocean by Foxe channel, and the
Atlantic by Hudson Strait.
Beet carcasses were mostly higher
on moderate supplies this week.
Dressed steer and heifer beef at
Portland on May 27 was 50 cents to
$1.00 above last Thursday. Good
steer sides ranged from 47 to 50
cwt, with, heifer beef generally (1.00
under steer beef. Good and choice
dressed veal under 180 pounds was
(48 to (49. up (1.00 for the period.
Most classes of beef were up (3.00
at San Francisco, while only steady
to lower on cow beef at Los Angeles.
Advances of 60 cents to (2.50 were
recorded at Chicago and New York.
Light receipts and advances In
prices at Midwest markets late last
week sent hog quotations at Port
land up (2 to (2.50 on Monday, but
about halt this gain had been lost
by midweek when good to choice
180x230-pound butchers were (25 to
(25.50. Sows were (17.50 to (18.50.
while feeder pigs under 100 pounds
were salable to (27 or (27.50. Good
to choice slaughter hogs were up to
(25.75 on Monday at Chicago,
around (3.50 above the quotation

held until Thursday when declines
of 50 cents to (1.00 occurred. Despite
the gains in live hogs, pork loins
were down (1.00 at Chicago ana
unchanged at New York. Fresh pork
on the coast wholesaled (1.00 to (3.00
higher. Pork carcasses under 190
pounds were (35 to (36 a hundred
at Portland on the 27th.
