Lower Wheat
Rates Sought
. PENDLETON, Ore., June 3 (Aft
Oregon'! wheat commission has de
cided to fight for lower freight rate
on wheat and flour, chairman Jens
lerjeson of Pendleton announced
today.
Present rates do not permit wheat
and flour produced In Oregon and
other Northwest slates to be sold
to eastern markets on equal terms
aith wheat grown In other areas, he
laid.
The commission at Its recent
meeting here outlined a broad pro
gram of research and education for
the coming year. It includes a study
of various markets at home and
abroad where Northwest wheat and
flour are sold. This study is expect
ed to point to ways of expanding
these markets, Terjeson said.
He said, however, that It would be
unprofitable to ship northwest
wheat elsewhere In the nation as
long as transportation costs re
mained at present levels.
The commission proposed to
study the freight rate problem In
cooperation with producers, deal
ers, millers and others Interested in
the Northwest wheat Industry.
Terjeson said the problem includ
ed water as well as rail transporta
tion. The commission also decided to
expand its research program to de
velop better varieties of wheat and
to find new uses for wheat.
Ashland Plans

, ASHLAND, June 3 Plans are al
ready under way for one of the
most gala Fourth of July celebra
tions ever to be held in this city,
Henry Enders reports as chairman
of the planning committee. The af
fair annually attracts thousands of
visitors from Southern Oregon and
Northern California' over the holi
day. . Ashland's beautiful Lithia park
will be the central meeting place
for the record number of visitors
expected to Invade the town over
the week-end. Special holiday fea
tures will include a baseball game
between the Ashland Lithians and
Cheney Studs of Central Point, a
gigantic parade, special games and
contests for youngsters, a rodeo,
traditional fireworks and dances.
Each of the special events will be
overseen by "Miss Ashland" and
her court to be chosen at festiv
ities Friday evening, July 3.

Mrs. Pawley's
Suit Vetoed
MIAMI. Fla.. June 3 M A cam
paign by his former wife caused
the resignation recently of William
D. Pawley as U. S. ambassador to
Brazil. Circuit Judge George E. Holt
ruled in a divorce suit here.
Holt yesterday dismissed Mrs. An
nie Hahr Pawley's separate main
tenance suit and upheld Pawley's
Cuban divorce.
In his 11-page opinion Holt said
Pawley Is not a resident of Florida,
as Mrs. Pawley contended, and that
evidence disclosed he gave his for
mer wife $170,000 after his divorce,
although the Cuban divorce made
no alimony provision.
The court said Pawley "was sub
jected to one of the most humil
iating experiences one in great pub
lic life can endure a vindictive
wife for no reason at all except to
satisfy her own impossible desire."
"Her campaign was so success
ful," the court added, "that he was
