site north of Portland. Started in
the fall of 1041. II was completed In
Uie summer of lUi'S.
Within three miles were Uiree
Henry Kaiser shipyards and II al
first was known as Kalservllle. The
maritime commission was In charge
of construction under a shipyards
facility contract and administration
was In Uie hands of Uie PorUand
Housing Authority.
On Uie day It was completed It
was Oregon's second largest city,
housing 35.000 persons shipyard
workers and their families.
It cost 126.000.000.
The eastern part of the clly-Ea.it
Vaniiort lay across Denver avenue
from Uie main part of lown. When
the war ended and shipyard workers
begun to drift away. East Vnnport's
l.ooa-plus buildings were moved to
other housing-short cities. A few
VaniHirl buildings were moved.
When the flood hit, many of Its
18.700 residents had been there since
the lown was built. Mostly, however.
II had become known as a veterans'
city.
To meet postwar overcrowding at
colleges, Ihe stale set up Vanport
college, a two-year InstltuUon. It
was near Uie dike's break and among
Uie first to go under.

16 Prisoners
No police court session was held
this morning and consequently the
city Jail was getting a little crowded.
Sixteen arrests were made over the
week-end.
Moat of the booxings were lor In
toxication and police Intercepted two
incident which might have become
serious.
Owen M. Hodge. 43, of 2111 Oak,
was arrested at that address early
this morning after he allegedly
threatened several members of hi
family, Including hi wife, mother
and father, with a hunting knife.
Hodge was booked a a drunk.
Oeorge Hawkins, 47, 120 Conger,
was Jailed for drunk and disorderly
conduct on the complaint of Mrs.
Marie C. Harris who told police that
he had threatened her with a pis
tol. The weapon was found In a bed
at the house.

Archie Joseph Vermeersch, 47-year-old
transient, was booked for
vagrancy after he wo caught pan
handling on Main street. He admit
ted getting out of Jail In Redding
Just last Friday after a 60-day stay

hotel, wo Jailed for drunk and va
grancy and seven other persons were
arrested for Intoxication.
Traffic arrest were minor.
Peter Renneger. 35, 2335 Eberleln,
was booked for running a stop sign
at East Main and Eberleln. He was
Involved In a slight accident. James
Leonard Ramsey, 23, of Keno. posted
15 for running a red light. Raymond
Walker. 47, Newell, Calif., posted $5
for a like offense.

tion of Uie basic rule and traffio

of low recreational activities, with
moat of the winter programs closed
and the summer program several
weeks away. However, II la a rush

ational program as was voted for
In Uie primary election May 21.
The department I In the process
of securing leaders and equipment
for playgrounds at Falrvlew, Mills.
Pelican, and Roosevelt schools,
KUHB. Moore, Klwanls, and Ewauna
parks.
The Ewauna park 1 probably new
lo most of us. It Is Uie name that
has been given to the old high school
site on 5th and High street. People
living In that neighborhood have
probably noticed work crews In ac
Uon for the put several days.
We are atartlng our development
work with plans of having the play
equipment for small children when
Uie playgrounds open June 14. There
I much we would like to have com
pleted before the playgrounds open,
but wilt have to be done during the
actual summer months. There should
be early acUvltle al Klwanls park,
where small children' equipment
ho been ordered.
All In all. the future looks much
brighter and we expect to see con
tinual Improvement In our play
grounds over the next several years.
