J WALLA WALLA, May 21 ()
p,tters, which a witness said were
r-in-itten by Governor Wallgren and
" attorney General Smith Troy, were
Hied as evidence today as the state
m pressed Its conspiring to bribe
lharge against former Assistant
2 Utorney General Shirley Marsh
w md Roy Houghton, one-time Brem-
Srton resort owner.
M The defendants are accused of
laving sought to bribe two Walla
Walla county official Prosecutor
ia albert Bradford and Sheriff A. A.
r thick, to permit gambling in the
JJiounty.
. Both prosecution and defense at
torneys agreed to admission of the
jltttcra Into evidence after Judge
n Louis Bunge opposed their admis
"ion and they were admitted. He
jiaid information they contained was
,,aarsay.
J Bradford said the letters were
ntrom the governor and attorney
"general He testified that the let
J tars said Marsh had been asked to

Passed By Court
The death sentences for Pelper
and his pals were passed by an in
ternational court sitting at Dachau,
where the trial Judge for hundreds
of thousands of German concentra
tion camp prisoners had been the
gas chamber.
There was no appeal from the gas
chamber. The sentences against the
nasi storm troopers were appealed
to the U. S. supreme court which
refused to review It on a 4-to-4 de
cision that it had no Jurisdiction.
This only points up again the le
gal difficulties in assessing war
guilt.
Meanwhile Secretary of the Army
Kenneth C. Royall has ordered a
stay of execution against 17 of
the condemned men pending-lnvesti-lt.it
ion of charges the nails had been
beaten and forced to confess at
mock" trials in prison by Ameri
can prosecutors.
The case has an added interest
because Peiper was a bold and out
standing soldier for whom some
American commanders profess a re
luctant off-the-record admiration.
They don't condone the crimes
committed by his men. They do
recognise his leadership In battle.
Flew Atlantic
One, American officer who had
been his prisoner, Lt. Col. Hal D.
McCown of Rushlon, La., even flew
the Atlantic to testify In Col. Pap
er's defense.
He said the voting nasi officer.
when his progress was halted, freed '
150 American prisoners and "at no 1
time did I see mistreatment of
American prisoners of war."
I remember Interviewing Lt Col. !
MrCown near Malmedy a few hours ;
after he got bark from capture ,
himself. Peiper, after burning his I
sli-anded tanks and guns, had taken
ofl on foot at the head of his column
of men and safely led them at night
through the American lines.
Where dues war end and murder
Ugln? Young Col. Prtcr, arro
gi.nl, brave and self-confident the
man who might have become an
other Hitler is the symbol of one
unfinished answer.
The shadow of night Is upon him.
