5-Year Term

Lewis Hurley Ankeny, 38, was
sentenced to (Ive yer In prison on
conviction of larceny by bailee Sat
urday by Circuit Jude David K.
Vandcnberit, and a notice of ap
peal wai filed Immediately by De
fense Attorney Ben Andenon.
Ankeny was convicted two weeks
aro after a Jury trial. The charge
Itrew out of the collapse of his slick
brokerage business here In 1946.

but after the sentence the amount
was ordered raised to $10,000 by
Judge Vandcnbenj. pending out
come of the appeal. Ankeny was
placed in the county Jnil to wait un
til the extra money Is raised.
In other circuit court action Sat
urday morning, trial of Homer
Franklin, indicted for first deitree
murder, was continued from April
24 until June 51, because three de
fense witnesses would be unable to
get to court for the earlier date.
The district attorney's office
agieed to the continuation.
Franklin is accused of murdering
his wife last November 30 and bury
ing her body In the backyard of
their suburban home. He is in the
county Jail.

Saturday, scaring the daylights out
of a plumber.
Mrs. Gwen Borilwlne, owner of
the suburban building, credited him
with a "supersonic' escatw. The
unidentified plumber was not hurt.
A typewriter firm had Just va
cated the place and the plumber's
employers were moving In. Mrs.
Bordwlne said the former occupants
apparently poured out some In
flammable cleaning fluid but didn't
flush it down.
The plumber touched a match
to a cigarette, tossed it into the
bowl and went sailing out the
door amid a shower of broken
porcelain. But he grabbed a garden
hose and dashed right bark to
douse the resulting fire. Damage
was slight.

President, Truman Saturday vetoed
legislation providing for an FBI
checkup on the loyalty of presiden
tial appointees to the atomic energy
commisoion.
Mr. Truman said the bill "is whol
ly unnecessary arid unwise." He also
called it "au unwarranted encroach
ment of the legislative upon the ex-
i ecutlve branch."
The measure would have author
ized the five senators on the con
gressionrl joint atomic energy com
mittee to direct the FBI to investi
gate the "character, associations
and loyalty" of any person appointed
to the commission. .
Present law requires FBI investi
gations of all atomic energy com.
mission employes wno are not sub
ject to senate confirmation.

Ralph Hepburn, crippled
scarred by 30 years of automobile
and motorcycle racing, pushed his
luck too far.
The 51-year-old Van Nuys. Calif.,
driver was killed yesterday at the
Indianapolis motor speedway. He
was practicing for his 16th attempt
to win the amiual J00-mile Memo
rial Day race.
Hepburn smashed Into the con
crete retaining wall.

from H. T. Elmberg of American
United Shows that his car was
stolen sometime after 3 a. m. Sat
urday at the fairgrounds where the
show Is now plavlng.
The car, Washington license A-193-178.
was a 1P43 DeSoto sedan,
owned by 8. H. Savage, but being
used by Elmberg.

Prisoner Hangs

YrCEKA, Calif.. May 17 Fred
Theodore Hall, 28. of Yreka, was
lound dead at 9:30 p. m. Friday,
after he had hanged himself In the
Vreka city Jail, according to au
thorities. Hall had been Jailed on a drunk
and disorderly charge signed by his
wife. Eva. after a family quarrel on
a downtown street. Hall hanged
himself with his belt, police said.
Halls was the second self-inflicted
death In a Siskiyou Jnil within
two weeks. On May 3, Hugh Her
bert Hughs. 45. of Los Angeles, died
in the Siskiyou county Jail from a
severed Jugular vein. Hughs was
also held on a minor charge.
