Soil Conservation Experts
Say Farmers Beginning To
Realize Importance Of Job
By PAIX W. HARVrt JR.
BAI.F.M, May 13 (P Stall axl
eullure experts now are beginning
to feel they are havinf some sue
cess In teaehlns" farmera that toil
erosion eosts money. But they know
they still have a lnnt ways to to.
There now are 11 toil conserva
tion distrtris in Orrnn. They in
clude more than &.0O0.0O0 acres of
crop and range land.
Art King, soils specialist at Ore
gon State college, says the country
won't have any farm lands unless
something Is done to stop erosion.
HiKh Tost
To show that erosion costs money.
King points out that an average
acre of fair soil In Oregon contains
from 1500 to $2500 worth of nitro
gen, phosphorus and potash. That's
what It costs when an acre of
farm land Is eroded.
King says the country has already
lost 70.000.000 acres of good crop
land by erosion. And It's continuing
at the rate of 500,000 acres a year.
Here's what F. L. Ballard, assocl-
I ate director of the OSC extension
service, una 10 any nuuui sous ana
soli conservation:
"Maintaining the producing ca
pacity of our soils is a vital factor
In guaranteeing the future prosper
ity of Oregon.
'Many things affect the soil con
dition the crops grown, the se-
i quence In the rotation of those
j crops, the Implements and tlllase
j methods used, the amount of irri
gation water applied ana tne man
ner of its application, and the bal
ance between crops and livestock
In the farm operation.
Knowledge Growing
"Knowledge of farming practices
that will maintain soil productivity
and protect the land against wash
ing and blowing Is constantly In
creasing. Adoption of Improved
acrtpicrs has been widespread.
"It Is appropriate that we take
slock of our position; evaluate the
job to be done: and concentrate
attention on these Items upon
which further progress is most
needed."
The 4-11 club boys and girls are
doing their part. too. They will
have their soil conservation projrets
this year for the Ulh straight year.
Nut Growers
The Independent Nut Packers of
Oregon has been orgnntvd to help
growers of walnuts and filberts pro
mote use of their products. The
organisation will handle about 30
per cent of Oregon's nuts.
One of the bis objectives will be
to expand markets In the baking
and candy Industries, which art
using many foreign nuts.
Spittle Hugs
OSC Hug Specialist Bob Every
warns strawberry growers to watch
out for spittle bugs. They suck the
Juice of strawberry plants and ruin
the berries.
He suggests use of rotcnoue dust.
Heavy rains wash away the rolen
one, and sunshine reduces Its kill
ing power. So several applications
might be needed.
