Bob Lemon is forcing Bobby Fel
ler to take a back seat in the Cleve
land wigwam. The converted ln-fielder-outfielder
with three wins in
four starts tops Rapid Robert in
wins, complete games and even in
strikeouts.
Last night Lemon shut out Wash
ington with four hits. 8-0, to lift
the tribe into second place, a half
game behind Philadelphia.
While Lemon has been writing his
own success story. Feller has been
knocked out of the box in his last
two starts. Before that he threw
a two-hit shutout and ran a string
of 17 consecutive scoreless innings.
In addition to his pitching. Lemon
is hitting .533 with eight hits in
15 at bats, including two home runs.
Cleveland - Washington was the
only game in the American league
yesterday. Rain washed out the De
troit at New York, Chicago at Phil
adelphia and St. Louis at Boston
dates. It also forced postponement
of the New York at Pittsburgh night
game in the National
Cincinnati suffered a severe blow
when it lost the services of Ewell
Blackwell, for an indefinite period.

The St. Louis Cardinals subdued
the Philadelphia Phils. 7-4. in a
night game for Howie Pollers first
win in three starts. Dutch Leonard,
the Phils' top pitcher, was injured
when struck by a line drive off the
bat of Red Schoendienst in the
third Inning. He was forced to leave
the game but was not believed seri
ously hurt.
The victory left the Red Birds
within a half game of Pittsburgh,
the league pacesetters.

NEW ROCHELLE, N. Y., May 8
VP) Bobby Locke, who is the great
estif not the only golfer ever to
come out of South Africa, is hitting
each shot even a little crisper than
usual in the Goodall Round Robin
tournament here.
Bobby is sore. He has been
banned from playing in the Profes
sional Golfers' association cham
pionship this summer at St. Louis.
Here in the Goodall, he has 14 of
this country's top professionals to
work on, and what more natural
than a burning desire to demon
strate that he is papa.
He feels he has been given a fast
shuffle by George Schnelter, the
PGA tournament chairman.
He didn't hesitate to express his
feelings after he had shot his sec
ond straight 69 over the par 72
course In yesterday's second round
of the Goodall event. This gave
him a "plus" score of 23. only one
behind the leader. Herman Barron,
of White Plains, N. Y.
The Goodall is played on a match-
play basis. In each of five rounds.
each contestant plays hole-by-hole
against the three other super-stars
in his foursome.
"Schneiter has barred me from
the PGA championship." he said,
"because he says I have been over
here so long I no longer am a vis
itor. The fact remains that I am
on a visitor's visa, which I can get
extended.
"I'm tired of this hanky-panky.
I couldn't play in the PGA now if
they invited me. because I've booked
exhibitions during that time. But.
in my opinion, Schneiter simply is
not capable of conducting a busi
ness as big as the PGA."
Two more rounds of the Ooodall
were scheduled today, with the fifth
and final 18-hole test tomorrow.
Locke, with three rounds to go. was
a match-play point behind Barron
and only three ahead of Bob Hamil
ton of Landover. Md.. at plus 20. yet
the entire feeling in the clubhouse
was that Locke had the thing in
hand.
