American homemakers during the
coming year, covering a study of the
world food situation In relationship
to world peace, support of the
United Nations, promotion of a
health program Including housing,
nutrition and medical service, safety
In homes and on the highways, and
the education of more young women
for home extension work.
There are now three and one-half
million women In the United Slatea
participating In homrinnklng act I vi
nes In home extension units and the
need tor leaders Is Increasing rapidly.
Oregon now otters home extension
courses to 37 counties and the goal
Is 30 In the next year.
Dr. Stevenson spoke on "Utilising
the Nature of Your Children In
Moulding Them Into the outsells of
Tomorrow."
Divert Youth
By diverting the natural drive of
youth Into the proper channels, In
dividuals can be developed who will
coutorm to a changing world, he
suld.
Today's children, living tinder the
stress uiul strain of world unrest,
too often are left to follow their
natural urges that lead Into diffi
culty. In closing he stated "that we can
mould desirable cltlsens of tomor
row. If today we take cognisance of
the terrific drive of youth and use
It constructively."

Newcastle Disease Spread
Worries State Poultrymen

of Newcastle disease, which has
been brought here from other
sutrs during the past year.
The first rase was discovered a
year ago. Since then there have
been 10 more cases.
, The disease now is well estab
lished in the East and Midwest, and
In California.
; State agriculture experts are do
ing everything possible to prevent
Its spread, as a severe epidemic
might ruin many flocks of chickens
and turkeys.
i Dr. E. M. Dickinson, a veterinar
ian at Oregon State college, warns
poultry owners to buy from other
atates only after investigating the
source flock.
I The disease affects a bird's
breathing apparatus, and is very
contagious. The death rate is about
25 per cent It causes a sudden
drop in egg production, and eggs
laid durinr an outbreak may have
oft or deformed shells. 1

! may carry the disease to healthy
birds.
Rain Damage
Frost and rain the past two weeks
may have caused much damage to
Willamette valley fruit crops, the
OSC extension service report. But
the answer won't be known for a
few weeks.
But the bad Oregon weather did
some good. It Improved irrigation
water supplies so greatly that there
will be as much irrigation water
as there was in the good water
year of 1946.
Unemployment
Benefits Drop
SALEM. May 6 ny-State unem
ployment benefits during April were
23 per cent less than In March, but
were about the same as In April.
1947. the unemployment compensa
tion commission said Wednesday.
The April benefits totaled 731.
936 for workers covered by the state
law. and $613550 for unemployed
war veterans.
Benefits paid In the first four
months of 1948 totaled $6,584,033
or 3 per cent less than In the first
four months of last year.
Of the workers getting benefits
In April, S3 per cent were Jobless
loggers and lumber workers. The
Portland area accounted for almost
half of the unemployed.
Z.4-D Quashed
Virgil Freed. OSC experiment sta
tion agronomist, says that 3.4-D
isn't the answer to all weed prob
lems. It kills dandelion, mustard, plan
tain and young Russian thistle.
But it doesn't work on black
berry, crabgrass, quackgrass. brack
enfern, Russian knapweed and wild
barley.
