from Cellar
Spahn Narrowly Misses Perfect
Game In Giving Phils Two Hits

Things are looking up for Billy Southworth and his Boston Braves
after a week of disaster. Excellent pitching jobs by Warren Spahn,
Red Barrett and Bill Voiselle have lifted the would-be contenders
from the cellar gloom.
Spahn'a first win of the season yesterday marked the return to
normalcy of Manager Southworth's gang. For Spahn and Johnny
Sain, as 30-game winners last year, were expected to lead the Braves
toward the 1948 flag. Spahn missed his first time out and Sain failed
twice.
It was Volsclle's three-hit shutout of Brooklyn that yanked the
Braves off the floor Monday. Barrett followed with a six-hitter
Tuesday. Then came Spahn's two-hit game against the Phillies.
In three games this oft-maligned staff yielded only 11 hits and
two runs. Billy never had to call on
his bullpen.
Spahn's job was a real sparkler.
He faced only 28 Phillies in his 7-0
victory, walked none and fanned
four.
Johnny Vander Meer made It a
left-handed day in the National by
stopping Chicago with six hits while
his Cincinnati mates clubbed
Johnny Schmlta and Don Carlsen
for 12 hits.
The Reds' Southpaw reversed the
trend of his first outing when he
walked 12 men. Yesterday he passed
only two, assuring himself of win
number one by an 8-1 score.
The victory put the Reds in a
four-way tie for second place at
.600.
There was bad news for Cincy,
too. Catcher Ray Mueller fractured
his right ankle sliding into home. He
will be out for 60 days.
The New York-at-Brooklyn game
was rained out. but both clubs pro
vided disturbing news. From the
Giants came word that Catcher
Walker Cooper, who has hit four
homers, has a chip fracture on his
left knee. He was injured April 21
but caught four of the last five
games. He will be out for several
days.
Pitcher Harry Taylor of the
Dodgers learned he may have to
undergo an appendicitis operation.
He is being held in a hospital for
further examination.
Cold weather postpone! the sched
uled night game between St. Louis
and Pittsburgh in the National. In
the American Washington at New
York, Boston at Philadelphia and
Cleveland at Chicago were called off
because of cold, rain or wet grounds.
Detroit took the sole American
league game. 9-4. over St Louis with
a 15-hlt assault on four Brownie
pitchers.

TJlbrickson has broken up the Uni
versity of Washington frosh crew
which rowed to the yearling cham
pionship last year at Poughkeepsie.
The youngsters also carried the
Washington banner to third place in
.the Lake Washington regatta against
11 of the nation's top collegiate
crews.
TJlbrickson kept them together
through early drills this season, but
this week he shuffled his entire
turnout. The coach left the way
open for returning to sophomore
varsity by saying the switch was an
experiment.
Stroke Warren Westlund, Dave
Dixon at No. 4 and Bob Young at
No. 3 held their places in the first
boat.

Tribute To Ruth
TOKYO, April 29 W-Babe Ruth
was honored today In all Japanese
professional baseball parks.
Four Japanese players who hit
home runs here were given 1000 ven
(S20) each by Sekai Nippo, a Tokyo
newspaper. Another 1000 yen went
to a home run hitter at Osaka.

Baseball Commissioner A. B. (Hap
py) Chandler was read to fans in
Korakuen park In Tokyo.

NEW YORK. April 29 Every
thing points to Citation winning
the 74th Kentucky Derby at Chur
chill Downs on Saturday, May 1.
If the son of Bull Lea-Hydro
plane II wins as expected the bay
colt will be the first Derby Winter
Book favorite to score since 1943
when Count Fleet romped home at
odds-on.
Citation, too, promises to be a
prohibitive betting choice when the
nation's crack 3-year-olds travel
the derby distance of one mile and
a quarter for the first time.
The champion 2-year-old of 1947
was bred at Warren Wright's Calu
met farm at Lexington, Ky. Wright
has had six other derby starters
and has won with two Whlrlaway
in 1941 and Pensive in 1944.
While H. A. (Jimmy) Jones is
listed as Citation's trainer it may be
that on Derby Day his famous
father, Ben Jones, will get his name
on the program as trainer. Besides
saddling Whlrlaway and Pensive to
derby victories, Ben also scored with
Herbert M. Woo It's Lawrin in 1938.
A victory for Ben Jones would tie
him with H. J. (Dick) Thompson
as having saddled the most derby
winners.
Riding Citation will be Eddie Ar
caro. who like she horse he will be
up on, is In a class by himself. The
Kentucky Italian has had three
derby winners and is tied with Isaac
Murphy and Earl Sande. Arcaro
scored with Whlrlaway. Lawrin and
F. W. Hooper's Hoop Jr.
Arcaro rode Citation for the first
time on April It when the pair ran
a close second to the crack sprinter
Saggy in Havre de Grace's Chesa
peake. It was Citation's second loss
in 14 races. Citation previously had
been ridden to nine victories by the
late Al Snider and to three others
by Doog Dodson.
Citation's lone setback as a juve
nile came last August in the Wash
ington Park Futurity when Steve
Brooks brought him home second to
the crack filly Bewitch, a Calumet
Derby eligible but unlikely to start.
Everything about Citation is Im
pressive. He. can carry weight, can
run a distance on any kind of a
track and is one of the most even
tempered horses ever to carry Calu
met's devil's red silks.
After beating Bewitch, Better
Self from the King ranch and 11
other starters in the Belmont Fu
turity last fall. Citation first proved
that he could travel over a mile on
November 8. On that day he won
the Plmllco Futurity, again beating
Better Self.
That victory enabled Citation to
run his earnings to 8155,680 in nine
races for 1947.
Rested for three months the

races early in February at Hialeah

Denver U Is Serious About
Big-Time Football

DENVER. April 29 i A rumor started making the rounds that
Johnny Baker. Denver university's new head football coach, was ticketed
for Southern California as successor to Jeff Cravath. It circulated only
until it reached Baker's ears
"That's fantastic!" he hollered. "I'm not going anywhere except
to that football field In South Denver. There's a great opportunity
waiting for me there.
"I'm Just getting my staff organized here, not only for next year
but for the future. If Bob Seymour, Bud Kerr. Mike Jurlch. Jess
Mortensen and I can't produce winning football teams in Denver, then
will be the time to talk about mov-
mI . 'others.
Baser s prompt denial of the
U. S. C. rumor and Seymour's re
cent rejection of a coaching Job at
his alma mater, Oklahoma, backs
up Denver's claim that it really is
serious about bringing some "big
time" football to the Rocky moun
tain region.
Weary of being a soft touch for
intersectional opponents, Denver
hired Baker, backfleld coach Sey
mour and end coach Kerr from the
professional Los Angeles Dons. Line
coach Jurich is a veteran of two sea
sons with the Brooklyn Dodgers pro
football team.
Freshman coach Mortensen was
obtained from Riverside. Calif. Jun
ior college, rounding out the biggest
and probably the best coaching staff
Denver ever had.
Now in the midst of spring train
ing, Baker seems well satisfied with
the results so far. He admits having
three big lines, one as good as the
men claimed him to be another
Man o' War.
He won all four Hialeah starts,
including the Everglades Handicap
and the 350.000 Flamingo Stakes,
both at one mile and an eighth.
The only thing bothering the Ci
tation backers is the fact that
Arcaro. a free lance rider this vear.
had his choice of derby mounts and
picked Citation. A few pessimists
recall that Arcaro selected to ride
Devil Diver in 1842 when Shut Out,
a stablemate, won the race.
This time Arcaro hopes to live ,
down that blunder of six years ago. I
and a good supply of run
ning and passing backs.
Denver isn't the only school In
the mountain country looking for
ward to a great improvement in the
caliber of its football.
At Wyoming, coach Bowdcn Wyatt
has had a year to get his feet on the
ground and his Tennessee system
should be clicking next fall.

neider Elmer Valo will return to
action today against the Boston Red
Sox.
Valo, 27-ycar-old veteran from
Palmerton. Pa., pulled up with
Charley horse while rounding third
base in the final pre-season exhibi
tion game with the Philadelphia
Phillies.
The lass of Valo for the first eight
games made a dent in the A s bat
ting power. His spot was handled
