Farm Price
Support Bill
Passes House
WASHINGTON. April 17 lPW.
The house agriculture committee
voted unanimously Friday to extend
government (arm price supports to
June 90. 1950. The legislation now
goes to the house floor for action.
Oenerally, farm commodities now
are selling at prices above support
levels.
The bill would reduce the sup
port of cotton from 02 5 per cent of
parity to 90 per cent of parity.
(Parity Is an artificial price base
designed to give farmers a pur
chasing power equal to that In
some previous 'avorable period.
usually 1909-1914.)
This Is what the committee pro
poses:
1. Price supports at 90 per t
of parity for the basic commodities
cotton, wheat, corn, tobacco, rice
and peanut. These supports now
are at 90 per cent with the excep
tion of cotton which Is at 92.5 per
cent.
2. For so-called non-basic com
moditiessupports ranging from
60 per cent of parity to the high
est suDport level in force for 1948.
with the exception of milk and milk
products on which the support shall
not be less than 0 per cent.
3. Continue government authority
to impose acreage restrictions and
to set marketing quotas.
Without the legislation, price sup
ports on non-basic commodities will
end December 31.

Oregon Story
In Colliers
"Out Where the West Begins" by
Jim Marshall is a story in semi
travelogue style of Western Oregon
and appearing In the April 24 Issue
of Collier's magazine.
Along with the article, which deals
much with Oregon's scenic beauty,
rivers, streams, mountains and cele
brations, is a full page map showing
the western half of the state.
Fort Klamath Is depicted by an
Indian brave, his squaw and papoose
holding hands In front of a gaily
painted teepee, while to the south
Pelicans at Klamath lake are feed
ing each other huge fish. Crater
lake is shown along with a skiing
form while to the north a cow Is
peacefully grazing, stressing this
country's cattle Industry.
There are a few flaws in the map.
Oregon City is located south of
Salem and the Oregon Caves are a
little off form, but the map is in
teresting and -has plenty of tourist
appeal, apparent intent of the
article. Medford is not shown on
the map.
Woman Sought
In Stabbing
Mack Shear. 57. who lives in
cabin back of the Arcade hotel, was
treated at Klamath Valley hospital
Thursday night for a small knife
wound in his back, allegedly In
flicted by a woman.
Friday morning Shear swore out
an assault and battery complaint
against his unidentified assailant in
Justice court. He was brought over
from the city Jail where he was
booked on a drunk charge after
leaving the hospital.
Shear told police a woman
stepped behind him and stabbed
him as he stood at the bar in a
downtown tavern, but investigation
has shown that the trouble might
h?ve taken place in or near Shear's
cabin.
He had a one-inch wound in his
left shoulderblade.
No Truant
Offense Here
READING. Pa.. April 17 lPt-
Reading's 200th anniversary queen
has settled her difficulties with the
truant officer.
Nineteen-year-old Marie E. Henne
missed so many classes since becom
ing bicentennial queen that a truant
officer visited her home to learn
why.
Marie, a post-graduate student
preparing for a nursing career, ex
plained to the truant officer that
she Just didn't have time to keep
her engagements as queen and at
tend her classes.
School officials decided they could
srant Marie a few concessions to
permit Reading to keep ls queen.
It was no strain for the school
board to make concessions, the tru
ant officer explained today. He
said that Miss Henne. as a post
graduate student, does not come
under compulsory attendance laws.
Some Reading residents opined
it was a neatly contrived publicity
gsg.
