the Hodges building on Main street
In Merrill, waa entered and robbed
sometime between the hours of 1
and 5 a. m. Friday, according to
Cltv Marshall Smith.
The cash drawer was removed
and some change taken from It. but
a sack containing approximately
$45 near the drawer was over
looked. Several checks that were
in the cash box were scattered over
the floor. The bandits took one 10
cent and one 25 cent slot machine,
broke them open, removed the
money and threw the machines Into
Lost river at a point behind the
building. The machines were re
covered Sunday morning when the
garbage man and city water-man
were doing a clean-up Job along
the river bank and spied the ma
chines In the shallow water.
Jerry Hodges, manager of the
shop, said he could not state defi
nitely how much change was in the
cash drawer, but estimated that op
proximatelv 40 or SO dollars was
In the slot machines.

breaking a rear window and un
locking the back door from the In
side. Smith said it appears that the
prowlers wore overshoes and gloves
as no prints were found. According
to Smith, the bandits must have
watched him closely to determine
hl whereabouts at the time the

check the downtown district on a
regular schedule.
