Wheat opened as much aa 114 cents a bushel higher on buying stim
ulated by the announced boost In the government'! wheat export goal.
The advance attracted considerable profit-taking, however, and prlcea
turned downward and stayed there most of the session.
There was a brief rally about mld-sesslon on the announcement that
the government had Increased Its buying price for wheat m cent a
bushel to $J.48'4, Chicago basil. Trade quieted quickly, however, and
prices went downward again.
Wheat closed IS to - cenU lower than the previous finished. May

and professional football.
Hundreds of messages of condol
ence poured Into the steel city fol
lowing the death yesterday of the
59-yenr-old coach of the National
rKtball league's Pittsburgh Steel
ers. He died alter an operation lor
a malignant burnt tumor.
Sutherland, who achieved his
greatest fame at the University ot
Pittsburgh, was found wandering
not lar from his mired car last Wed
nesday near Bandana, Ky. Physi
cians first believed he was suffering
from nervous exhaustion.
John Mlchelosen, first assistant
coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers,
was mentioned In many circles to
day as the man most likely to suc
ceed Dr. John B. Sutherland.
Mlchelosen long has been Suther
land's right-hand man, serving as
an assistant coach under the famed
coach at the University of Pitts
burgh, the Brooklyn Dodgers and
the Steelers.

night by defeating Seattle 76-74 to
end the best-of-flve game playoff
for the title. Seattle won one game.
The visitors started off like cer
tain winners and built up a 31-15
lead early In the game. Then Port
land balked. Paced by Erlnnd An
derson and Stan Williamson, The
Indians racked up 17 straight points
before Seattle counted again. At
halftlme Portland led 47-35.
The desperate Seattlrltes made
another bid In the fourth quarter,
sneaking out In front 73-71 on
Boody Ollbertson's goal and foul
shot.

Navy Reserve
Five more young men have en
