contact with the weeds and are ef
fective on top growth of all weeds
including the grasses but do not. as
a rule, translocate Into the roots.
Therefore, application must be
made every year, and In case of
perennial weeds, two or more times
a year to keep down top growth.
The principal contact herbicides
Include petroleum oils, chiefly d ie.se 1
and fuel oils, as well as special oils
which are now being offered by oil
companies and which show con
siderable promise as .weed killers.
Oils are sometimes fortified with
dinitro compounds to make them
more effective and are prepared tn
such a way thnt they can be added
tn water to make an emulsion which
is sprayed on the weeds. Other
spray solutions are made from salts,
such as sodium arsenlte. sodium
chlorate and ammonium sulfamate.
Care is needed when usinc arsenite
and chlorate compounds where live
stock is ranging because of the poi
sonous character of these materials.
Sodium chlorate solutions when
sprayed on Vegetation or clothing
become fire hazards when dry. such
solutions should not be used around
buildings or lumber yards.

Squirrels Due
In Few Days
Oround squirrels will make their
appearance in considerable num
bers just as soon as a few days of
good, warm weather occur. Poisoned
outs will be available throughout
the county at the regular stores
and at the county agent's office In
the federal building.
Early poisoning is most effective
on warm, still days particularly
early In the morning. A few ker
nels placed outside of the squirrel
hole is sufficient. They should never
be placed In a lump but should be
scattered. Ten to 15 kernels scat
tered in front Is enough.
It should be remembered that this
poison Is dangerous to all animals
otfelald and AeuM.

Seen For Pacific Coast

like ham and eggs will likely be
eating ham and no eggs next fall.
. Noel L. Bennlon, poultryman of
the OHC extension service, says
eggs will be scarce over the coun
try by next fall and the Pacific
coast will have the worst egg short
age. The country's poultrymen don't
plan to raise many new birds
Twenty per cent fewer eggs were
set in March than there were a
year ago. For April and May de
livery, there are 40 per cent fewer
chick orders booked than a year
ago.
And the chicks that are being
hatched now will lay half the egss
next winter.
New Supply Needed
Bennlon says poultry producers
must brood chicks this spring In
oTder to take advantage of the com
ing egg shortage. He says a good
Doultryman will each year replace
7.1 to 100 per rent of his laving
flock with a new supply of pullets.
He said the recent break In feed
prices and the reduced number of
chicks should Improve the outlook
for egg producers.
Oregon used to shin a lot of eggs
to other states, but the war-swollen
nonulatlon of the state has reversed
the flow of eggs.

ped a record 514 carloads of eggs to
other states. Last year only 40 cars
were moved out, and other states
