Forest Nursery Grows
Trees For Oregon Farms;
Valley Hay Outlook Poor
By Ml L W. 1IARVKV JR.
SALEM, April 1 WV-Oregon State
college's extension forester, Charles
Rom, Is trying to net every Oregon
farmer to have a little forest of hl
own.
The Oregon forest nursery, run by
the state forestry department, grows
600,000 trees a year Just for farm
ers. The farmers can buy them at
low cost. Tree orders from farmers
now are heavier than ever.
Shelter Belt
Ross says every Oregon farm could
use a few trees, either In a wood
lot, in a shelter belt, or to improve
the scenery.
Most of the trees so far have gone
to the irrigated sections of Central
and Eastern Oregon. But ranchers
In the dry land areas are hard to
convince when It comes to putting
In trees. Ross said trees in Eastern
Oregon serve as windbreaks, shelter
belts, or for shade.
Extensive tree plantings have been
made on farms in the Columbia
river and coast counties. There they
are used to protect homes, crops
and livestock from strong winds. I
Ross said tree planting for fence
posts, Cascara and Christmas trees
will be a big money-maker for farm
ers In the near future.
Hay Shortage
Livestock owners, especially those
In the Willamette valley, have cause
to work up a mild case of hay fever
"Y" Groups
Plan Trip
Klamath Falls will be well repre
sented at the YMCA youth and gov
ernment legislative assembly at
Salem this week-end. when mem
bers of Tri-Hi-Y, the girls" group,
and Hi-Y. boys' group, meet with
other Y delegates at the state capi
tol. The group leaves here Thursday,
returning Sunday. Accompanying
the KUHS students are Mrs. Nilelet
ta Patterson, advisor to the Junior
chapter of Tri-Hi-Y, and Cecil L.
Kollenborn. general secretary of
Klamath county YMCA.
The young people will serve as
senators and representatives at the
official assembly in the state legis
lative chambers. Kollenborn said to
day that the significance of these
assemblies is that frequently im
portant proposals and projects
sponsored by the youth groups,
have found a place through acts of
the state legislature and have been
translated into law.
The program began In New York
state in 1936 and is now being car
ried on in 23 states. Twelve more
states are making preliminary plans
to cooperate In the program next
year.
Attending from here will be Cam
eron Stewart, Doris Ethredge. Tom
Orr, Beth Bunch. Claudette Glea
son. Zada Taylor. Merlene Burning
ham and Margueritte WedeL
E. R. Jaekman, crops specialist of
the OSC extension service, says
Western Orrton vetch hay which
normally produces the bulk of West
ern Oregon's hav will be extremely
short this year. Wei weather ha cut
the vetch acreage to the lowest
point In many years.
Alfalfa and clover acreage is way
down, too, Jackman urges stockmen
lo buy their hay early.
Acreage Gain
Oregon's acreage tins year of
spring planted field crops will be
five per cent more than last year.
Barley acreage is up 31 per cent,
spring wheat and corn up 18 per
cent, and oats up one per cent.
Farmers will grow more flaxseed,
but less dry peas, beans Biid sugar
OCT IS,
Pacific coast farm wage rates are
four times what they were 10 years
ago. They are higher than the na
tional average.
Yard Tip
Don't strain your bark trvint to
get moss out of your lawn. Moss is
caused by a shortage of nitrogen.
So put some good nitrate fertilizer
on your lawn and watch the moss
go away.
Federal wheat crop Insurance is
in effect in Gilliam. Morrow. Sher
man. Umatilla and Union counties.
The insecticide, benzene hcxa
chloride. is great stuff for killing
wire worms and other Insects. But
Robert Every, an OSC bug and in
sect specialist, urges farmers not to
use it.
The reason: It gives a bad flavor
to potatoes, carrots, and possiblv
some other crops. And not only that,
the bad flavor mieht last for v.a,-
or more after the farmer quits using
it.
And it also gives a bad flavor to
poultry meat, making it impossible
to eat.

BALTIMORE, April 1 (JPt A
Baltimore man tucked three dollars
In his shoe as a precaution against
robbers, but it was the central police
court that profited by his prudence.
The robbers who took his pants
wallet and all missed the three
dollars in the shoe.
But Magistrate James R. Cadden
relieved him of $2.45 of it in the
form of a disorderly conduct fine,
after he was found on a city street
corner minus the stolen pants.
Anyway, his foresight saved him
55 cents.
Livestock Prices
Remain Unchanged
Livestock and meat prices were
mostly unchanged or higher at cost
markets this week but weakness was
showing as receipts increased, par
ticularly at Chicago, according to
the weekly meat animals and wool
review prepared by the OSC ex
tension service from USDA reports
and other data. Meat production be
tween the 15th and the 20th was
only slightly more than half as large
as the previous week, due to strike
conditions in many plants; but con
siderably larger receipts this week
over-taxed the slaughtering ca
pacity of plants still operating in !
Chicago.
All classes of cattle lost consider
able price ground at Chicago. Steers
on the 25th were $1.00 to $1.50 lower
compared to last week's close; heif
ers were $1.50 to $2.50 lower, and
cows were down $2.00 to $2.50.
Vealcrs were off $1.00.
