Supervisor
YREKA, Calif., March 24 Ed
Bukcr hai filed nomination papers
for the post of lupervisor of the sec
ond district, bringing to the total of
frur the number of candidate who
will run for the Job. The present
supervisor of that district, T. Rod
ney Douglass of Mount Shasta, will
net be a candidate.
Florin Kohlbiiker, W. R. Barr and
Hugh Corwln filed their nomination
papers for Douglass' post earlier.
Supervisor Gordon Jacobs is the
only other supervisor who will be
opposed for re-election. James Ste
venson of Macdoel has taken out
nomination papers but has not as
yet returned them to County Clerk
Waldo Smith. George C. Yost of
Ttilelake has announced his inten
tion to run for Jacobs' post, but has
no! taken out nomination papers.
Candidates have until Saturday
noon. March 27 in which to circu
ital nomination papers.

CASCADE SUMMIT, March 24
Every town should have a May
Queen but what can Cascade Sum
mit do? It is overrun with bachelors
instead of pretty maidens so there
is speculation on having a May King
instead to celebrate lodge opening
and start of fishing season on May
Day. But which one to choose?
Agent Nolan Johnson of the S. P.
depot said he was working that day.
Grant F. Erickson of Adkison and
Melssner says not to wake him early
to be King of the May, and Jack
Melssner is off on a ski-trek so he
won't be here. Bill Akers of Odell
Summit lodge thinks he should be it
because of his superior height, and
Frederick Magulre, also of the lodge,
refused to run because he has been
shoveling snow enough now and he
wouldn't appreciate the suggested
prize. Instead of a golden key to the
city the king would receive a be
ribboned snow shovel so he could dig
down and find the city.

Face Marital Problems
After Divorce Case Row

Residents of this atomic labor- ;
story project reservation currently
are stuck with their marital prob
lems. They've run up aiaimt a tem
porary legal barricade in bringing
divorce action In New Mexico courts. ;
Although they were given the
right to vote in state elections by a
special act of the 1947 New Mexico
legislature, legal status of residents
here as citizens of New Mexico is
clouded.
Hopes for a state supreme court
clarification of the matter dimmed
recently.
Not Residents
Complications set in when District
Judge David Carmody of Santa Fe
ruled in effect that residents ot Los
Alamos are not legal residents of
the state. His district includes San- j
doval county in which the A-bomb i
laboratory reservation is located.
Judge Carmody's action came in
dismissal of a divorce complaint j
brought by a resident of the atomic
community. He ruled his court bad
no jurisdiction to grant a divorce to
a person on the federal reservation.
Saying he realized the "serious
ness of the decision." Judge Car
mody maid it was based entirely
-upon the point of law that Los
Alamos Is owned by the United
States government, and it has ex
elusive jurisdiction over it." He held,
therefore, that Los Alamos "in ef
fect is not a part of the state of
New Mexico for residential pur
poses." Carmody termed It "very unfor
tunate that a case such as this can
not be immediately determined by
the supreme court of our state and
possibly by the supreme court of the !
United States."
His action, he explained, applies
to residents of Los Alamos who live
on property condemnea by the fed
eral government and taken over by
the AEC. It did not apply, he said,
to some who live on federal forest
land at the project.
The jurist voiced concern over the
legitimacy of children born to mar
riages after a Los Alamos divorce.
"It could very easily be." he said,
"that a divorce would be granted
and subsequently, by a ruling, our
supreme court could find that It
was invalid.
"This would, of itself, make any
subsequent marriages void and
children of the parties by subse
quent marriages illegitimate."
Attorneys for the woman whose
divorce complaint was dismissed by
Judge Carmody planned an immedi
ate appeal to the state supreme
court. Before the appeal could be
perfected, however, the woman
withdrew her action.
New Mexico attorneys and many
residents of Los Alamos have ex
pressed hopes a similar case would
be filed soon and carried through
to a ruling by the high court to
clarify the situation.
Art and stage crews are working
all tills week on the set of the
student body play. "The Black
Flamingo." Four departments con
tribute toward making the play a
success; the woodworking depart
ment, under Francis grapple: the
art department, under Bob Banis
ter; the orchestra, under John
O'Connor; and. of course, the dra
matics, under Mrs. Roberta Blom- j
qulst. j
The night of April I will be the
only evening performance of the
play, and a student manure Is be
ing presented March 31. one week
away. On this day students in the
auditorium will see a reenactmrnt 1
of the fall of the Bastlle and the
French revolution. The plav centers :
around the Inn. "The Black Flam- i
lngo." which was a notorious den
for thieves. Marie Antoinette's fam
ous necklace is stolen and through
out the play the discovery of the
thief is attempted.

dress that has been collected

fore the war. Girls helping with the
costumes, dressing and prompting

Boy Burns To Death
In Farmhouse Fire '

uP A two-year-old boy crawled
under a bed In fright last night and
burned to death a the Ray Piper
farmhouse was leveled northwest of
the city.
Clark county sheriff's deputies
probed the debris for several houra
to find the youngster. Michael
Piper, a grandson and ward of Mr.
and Mrs. Piper. '
Firemen said the victim and an
other youngster were seated at the
dinner table with the grandparents
when fire burst through a wall into
the kitchen. Evergreen Hre Chief
Prank Grace said the boy appar
ently ran unnoticed to hide under
the bed when the others fled.
