Oleo Taxes
WASHINGTON, March 13
The Nationnl grange, one of the
largest farm organizations, told con
gress Friday that special taxes on
oleo are needed to protect both con
sumers and the dairy industry-
Keiuie S. Bagshaw. chairman of
the grange executive committee,
made this argument to the house
agriculture committee. That group
is considering 18 bills to repeal all
federal taxes on oleomargarine.
These taxes range up to 10 cents
a pound on colored oleo and up to
$600 a year license fee for dealers
in colored oleo. Some consumer
groups are urging repeal of the taxes
on grounds they add to the cost of
living.
"As is well known, when oleo
margarine made its appearance in
this country, roughly 75 years ago.
it was common practice to color it
in Imitation of butter and to sell It
as butter," Bagshaw said.
"That was deceiving the consumer.
and was subjecting the dairy in
dustry to unfair competition, as well.
"Federal taxes on oleomargarine
are not levied for the primary pur
pose of raising revenue . . . But for
the purpose of providing funds for
the administration and enforcement
of the oleomargarine laws -nd to
prevent deception in the manu
facture and sale of the product."

Bids Opened
A low bid of S361.108 was tendered
to the state highway commission In
Portland Friday for construction of
the new Klamath Falls north en
trance route

whether the bid was low enough to
be acceptable to the commission,
but hopes were expressed by local
road promoters that it came close
enough to the most recent state es.
timate for the job.
Rogers Construction company of
Portland submitted the bid. This
firm did the grading on the Chilo
quln cut-off of US 97.
T. B. Watters, chairman of the
roads and highways committee of
the chamber of commerce, said:
"Klamath Falls has been waiting
for this job for a long time, and we
hope the highway commission sees
fit to accept this bid."
The north entrance will bring
traffic from US 97 to Esplanade
street. The Job Includes remodel
ing the Esplanade bridge over the
canal.

the last war as well as careful study
of the International scene, O. K.
Puckett, well-known Klamath Falls

tions" as principal speaker before

accord with the principles which
were given to humanity 2000 years
ago, or there can never be lasting
peace."
Puckett also emphasized that he
believes America Is duplicating the
mistake of shipping iron to Japan

ials to Russia under today's conditions.
