Freight Outfit Of Yesterday
From Shaniko to Silver Lake wos the high assert route
followed by the mule freight outfit pictured in today's Pho
tographic History exhibit.
Slivers Emery of Klamath Foils loaned this picture for the
series. It shows a freight outfit on the Shaniko-Silver Lake
route about 40 years ago.
Shaniko was the railhead of the Columbia and Southern
X.joilrood, which was built south through the Sherman county
wheat belt from Biggs, on the Oregon-Washington Railroad
and Navigation company line on the Columbia river.
From the rail's end, freight teoms such as that shown
here, took up the burden and moved large quantities of sup
plies to points over the great Central Oregon desert.
Shaniko is no such busy point today as it was when the
picture was taken. The rails of the old line hove been taken
up as far back as Kent in Sherman county. Shaniko is now
a sleepy little town on U. S. 97, in Wosco county just south
of the Sherman line.
The Columbia and Southern railroad wos built to the town
of Wasco in 1897, and extended to Shaniko in 1898.

There is nothing "us wholesume

Dr. Dorothy T. Spoerl, a member
of the psychology department of
American International college, ad

"You don't hove to travel 100
miles Into tho woods where you'll
be alone with temptation," shr
added.
Dr. Spoerl offered the advice luM

ing the first of a series of three
lectures on preparation for marriage.
She warned couples not to "spend
so much time in wooing that on the
day you walk to the altar the only
thing you know about your spousc-to-be
Is thut he or she is a fuclle
