Strike In
Atom Plants
Postponed
WASHINGTON. March t iF
AFL unions, bowing to a plea by
President Truman, today put off
strike plans for at least two weeks
at atomic bomb laboratories In Oak
Kldgc, Tenn.
The president, before leaving Key
West, Fla.. to return to the capital,
took the first step provided In the
Taft-Hartley act for dealing with a
national emergency strike threat.
He said he was nnniing a board of
Inquiry and would ask It to report
by March 19.
It was the first time Mr. Truman
had made such a move under the
act passed over his veto last June 23.
After the board reports, the at
torney general could ask for an in
junction. If granted this court or
der would postpone a strike for an
other 80 days.
The AFL unions represent about
$00 workers at one of Carbide and
Carbon Chemical corporation's Oak
Ridge plants. The workers had been
set to walk out at midnight tonight
after week-long contract negoti
ations seemed hopelessly stalled.
The carbide and carbon firm took
over from the Monsanto Chemical
company at the Tennessee atomic
plant last Monday. The unions had
a contract with Monsanto which ex
pired when that company ended Its
Oak Ridge operations.
Another threatened shutdown at
Oak Ridge was averted last Decem
ber, when the CIO gas. coke and
chemical workers reached a last
minute settlement with the same
company.
The AFL unions are reported to
b asking for a wage boost of 18
cents an hour, plus 34 cents an
hour in other benefits.
