ranking communists who signed the
11143 declaration dissolving the

Among the other signers were

control of Bulgaria: Maurice Thorez,
militant communist leader In
Prance; and Andrei Zhdanov, who
In 1B47 was to sign the Poland
declaration setting up the comin
furm. a successor to Uie Comintern.
Gottwald, a calm, deliberate man
who bears some physical resem
blance to Htalln, became premier of
Czechoslovakia after the communist
triumph In the first post-war elec
tion. The communists became the
dominant party by capturing 38 per
cent of the seats In parliament. As
chairman of the party and a vice
premier. Gottwald was asked by
President Eduard Benes to form a
government. He achieved a coult
Uon cabinet representing seven
parties In July. 1046.
A year later Czechoslovakia was
Invited to parUclpate In Uie Marshall
plan talks In Paris, and accepted the
Invitation. But Oottwald was sum
moned with other high-ranking
members of his government to .Mos
cow. Prom Moscow he announced
Czechoslovakia would reverse herself
and reject the Marshall plan Invitation.
Gottwald was barn of a peasant
family In Moravia November 23,
I8U8 St. Klement's Day. In World
War I he was drafted into the
Austrian artillery, but he was con
sidered unreliable and was shifted
to a searchlight brigade.

Hobby Meet
FORT KLAMATH, Ore.. Feb. 25
The hobby meeting of the Fort
Klamath home extension unit was
held on Friday afternoon at Uie
home of Mrs. Fred Parker north of
Fort Klamath. It had been orig
inally planned to have Uie group of
women meet at Uie home of Mrs.
Frank Denton near the Parker
home, but the road from the high
way to the Denton ranch home was
too muddy to be passable. The sub
ject of the meeting was "Textile
Painting."
F.ach woman attending brought a
pacr sack lunch, and coffee was
served by the hostess.
Those In attendance were Mrs.
William C. Hacklcr, Mrs. Hansford
T. Williams. Mrs. Raymond S.
Looalcy. Mrs. Bert Cray. Mrs. Harry
Orem. Mrs. Frank Denton and the
hostess. Mrs. Fred Parker.
