Mrs. Johnston called the flareup

himself Is "sincere" enough, but
added:
"The fact tint the loudest ap

Ski Journey
GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore.. Feb.
19 (Ph-Two skiers slipped down the
slope southward from Summit for
est guard station at 1 p. m. today,
starting a 300-mtle trip never before
attempted.
The forest service and the ski pa
trol had warned against it because
of the possibility of accidents in a
remote. Inaccessible wilderness.
Jack Meissner, husky young trap
per and resort worker who lives
high in the Cascades, and Emery
Wood all. experienced outdoorsman
from Arlington, Va.. said today they
had no doubt they could safely fol
low the Cascade range summit from
here to Crater lake.
As they checked through Summit
guard station, each carried a 45
pound back pack containing, in ad
dition to food, a small tent, emerg
ency ski repair equipment and red
and yellow sheets with which to
signal aircraft it in trouble.
Meissner said he had arranged
with the CAP at Eugene to fly over
their route for regular checks.
The men expect to spend 30 davs
on the trip. They will pick up addi-1
Uonal supplies at two points on the
route where highways cross the
mountains.
Meissner, who abandoned his orig
inal plan to go alone when the for
est service objected, said he had
been planning the trip for more
than a year.
(Continued from Page One)
even as you and f. Money was
SCARCE, they complained. And so
on.
bo government added another
wrinkle.
More money UPPED prices. The
clutriu had more to Jingle in their
Jeans. It pleased them. They'd
say to each other: "The way to
work it Is to have prices hisli and
wages high. Then everything's rosy
lor an oi us lots of money to spend,
and when everybody spends money
business it good."
By the lime the lunkheads down
at the bottom learned the hard les
son that you can't eat money, or
wear it, or shelter yourself with It.
and all it's good for Is to buy things
and when prices are too high it
won't buy much, the ensuing de
pression had run its course and It
was time to start another war and
debase the money again and there
was a NEW crop of saps to sav:
Ain't It all wonderful? The wav
to work it is to have prices high and
wages high. Then there's lots of
money to spend and when every
body spends money business Is
good."
WHAT'S the moral?
Oh. there isn't any. Things have
just been going that way for a long
time, and will go on that way for a
long time more.
