Cold Weather
Cuts Power
BEND, Feb. 13 m Three Central
Oregon counties were short of power
again today. The cold weather was
blamed.
Low temperatures Increased de
mand for electricity at the same
time that lowered stream flow in
the frozen Deschutes river and Ice
hogged fuel at power plants cut the
supply.
Power was being alternated among
towns In Deschutes, Crook and Jef
ferson counties. Lumber mills cur
tailed operations.
they're like life itself," said Curly.".
nhn.se Illinois are a rippling an
thology of the last half century of
music. "They're popular for a
while and then lose out. But every
so often they come back again as a
new generation comes along to en
Joy them."
Each night he lives over his life
again as he tinkles out 300 to 300
tunes.
"Hello Bill"
Few people now request any of
the 30 numbers he wrote himself,
except lonely, beleaguered Elks who
call for "Hello Bill." the official
lodge song.
But more than three decades ago
people in the streets hummed his
now half-forgotten novelty. "If I
Catch the Guy Who Wrote Poor
Butterfly."
And an America, weary of the
waltz, turned eagerly to the new
dance rhythms Green composed for
the famous Castle team "Tango
Argentino," the first tango written
in this country. "Innovation Tan
go." "Sans Souci," the "Half and
Half" and "RaBglif the Old Virgin
ia Reel."
The death of Vernon Castle tn
an air crash in 1918 broke up his
hit parade. Castle had been his
close friend.
"For 20 years I couldn't write a
note." Curly said.
He went into vaudeville with his
wife. They were a featured act on
the "four-a-day" circuits for years
until something happened to vaude
ville that shouldn't happen even
to vaudeville.
Green retired but he's back again
now. He's turned out a new catchy
dance tempo "kind of a boogie
woogie with a rhumba rhythm"
which he says is catching on In
Harlem.
"Writing a melody is easy." he
said. "I can do it in 15 minutes and
base it on anything a phone num
ber, a car license, the figures on a
dollar bill.
"But turning out a hit tune?
There's no rhyme or reason to that.
Writing a hit song Is like throwing
dice you can come up with a nat
utal any time."

Fish Problems
Considered
WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 iSt
President Truman says the state
department has under active con
sideration the naming of a high
level official to handle internation
al fisheries problems.
Senator Magnuson D-Wash.l
told a reporter today that the presi

fect. Magnuson. Rep. Tollefson (R
Wash.) and West coast fisheries
industry officials have urged such
action. They say it Is needed to
give the nation's fisheries a better
standing in negotiating on inter
national fishery problems.
"But women are turning more and
more to new fields, and some are
bound to put their thoughts in
music."
I asked 'Curly" if through the
years he hadn't developed a phobia
against familiar tunes he has
played thousands of times.
"How can you dislike anything"
that has a melody?" he said.
One of his proudest memories 1
the day in 1917 when the late
George M- Cohan stepped into a
music house humming a tune he
had just composed. He wanted it
written doWn. Green volunteered.
"I think Cohan got the tune from
listening to the railroad wheels that
morning as he rode in," he recalled.
"There wasn't a piano handy, so I

The tune was "Over There."

Story Booed
WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 UP) A
veteran New Orleans cotton dealer
told senators Thursday there isn't
any basis for talk of "inside" gov
ernment information "leaking" to
commodity speculators.
Lolled back in the senate agri
culture committee's witness chair.
E. F. Creekmore said there may
have been leaks at one time, but
not in recent years.
He said:
"I have never yet heard of any
leaks coming out of the department
of agriculture.
"There has been no chance for in
side information legislatively (from
congress) because congress has not
been considering farm commodi
ties." The agriculture committee Is
one of three congressional groups
currently inquiring Into speculation :
In cotton, grain and other com
