Market - Gunning For Wildfowl In Mexico Is Target For Sportsmen

Man slaughter annually of between
2,000,000 and 4,000,000 wild ducks by
smoothly-geared Mexican market
gunners skillfully using batteries has
prompted sportsmen oi two coun
tries to organise against such sweep
ing destruction of game birds.
The system far transcends com
mercial shooting practices rampant
In the United States 100 years ago.
Market gunning within the United
States, while still prevalent to some
extent In certain areas, has been
checked substantially by federal
laws. Bales of game birds are made
through black market channels to
some restaurants and night clubs,
where they are served at fancy
prices.
The raising of wild ducks com
mercially within the United States
Is permitted under federal license or
permit The Identification of commercially-raised
fowl Is easily made
by aluminum leg bands placed under
state law provisions.

Meissner Looks For
Partner On Ski Trip
PORTLAND, Feb. 11 Jack Meissner, 28-year-old Cascade Summit
woodsman and skier who plans to challenge the 300-mile Skyline trail,
to looking for a partner to share his adventures.
Meissner proposes to travel on skis from Government camp at
Mount Hood to Crater lake, following the backbone of the Cascades.
He Intends to leave Friday, February 13.
But the U. S. forest service has frowned on the solo trip, pointing
out that if he gets losmnd such a thing Is entirely possible, even to
an expert woodsman it win M up
to the forest service to unaeriaae
any rescue.
The forest service can not stop
htm from making the trip, Meissner
said, but has advanced the Idea that
he ought not to be alone, that he
should have a partner In case any
thing goes wrong.
The Eugene civil air patrol Is sup
posed to keep In some sort of con
tact with Meissner irom tne air,
follow his red coat as much as pos
sible. But there are stretches of
many miles where a man In a plane
would not be able to spot a man on
the ground. In tho trees, regardless
of how clear the weather was.
Meissner's plans call for a 30-day
trip and he would carry auK.-n
tested and dehydrated foods In a
pack for his meals. Most nights he
believes he can reach a forest shel
ter, but some would have .to be
pent In a sleeping bag and cut
down army tent he will carry on
his back also.

school league basketball game to
slide into a tie with the Chiloquln
Panthers lor second place in the

Both Henley and Chiloquln have

to put the Hornets against the
Panthers at Chiloquln Friday night

The Gilchrist Grizzlies play Sac
red Heart Trojans Friday at Gil
christ, a March of Dimes benefit as
well as a regular county conference
tut. The Grizzlies are in first place,
undefeated, and will be favored to
finish the season that way over the

season go to regulate seedings in the
all-county tournament which will
be played here In Klamath Falls
February 20-21. George Elliott, Hen
ley, and Ray Oehlerlch, Gilchrist,
are making arrangements for the
tourney which will develop the

Purchase of Inflelder Jack Tobin
from Tulsa of the Texas Baseball
league was announced today by the
Ban Francisco Seals. Terms were
not disclosed.
. Tobin, 26, from Oakland, hit .293
for Tulsa last season. He played for
New Orleans in 1946 after originally
joining the Boston Red Sox in 1940.
He plays both second and third base.
His older brother Jim, retired,
pitched for the Boston Braves and
Pittsburgh.

To fight against the massacre,
sportsmen have united under the
banner of Ducks Unlimited, inter
national restoration agency. A Mexi
can chapter, comprising 200 leading
wlldfowlcrs In that country, has
been organised.
A long-range program of legisla
tion and education will be promoted
as a means of allowing more ducks
to return north In the spring for
seasonal nesting.
With that accomplished, more
waterfowl will be returned In the
fall for sport and recreational hunt
ing. Most of the birds are bred in
western Canada, and to a degree In
the north central states.
The program now starting was
suggested to federal authorities some
years ago, but for some Inexplicable
reason was never developed.

Washington State college held a full
game lead on the northern division
Pacific Coast conference basketball
field today.
Winners of three straight games
by a single point, the Cougars eked
out another close one last night In
coming from behind to down tail
end Idaho 38-35.
Outplayed in every department in
the first half, Washington State
trailed 19-16 at the midway point
and didn't assume the lead until
after eight minutes of the secord
period.
The Cougars stalled out the final
two minutes of the game to protect
a 37-35 margin, but took a foul shot
in the last 10 seconds to increase the
margin.
Each team hit 14 times from the
floor, out Washington State picked
up the difference in hitting 10 of 18
attempts from the foul line as com
pared with Idaho's 7 of 16.
The Victors' Vince Hanson and
Idaho's Preston Brimhall shared
scoring honors with 11 each.
By its win Washington State
swept its four-game series with the
Vandals. Still to be played In their
bid for the division title are two
games with Washington's second
place Huskies and a pair each
against Oregon and Oregon State.
Both of the Oregon series will take
the Cougars on the road.

mumps, Gil Dodds, the 4:05 J mile
record-maker, has run his last in
door race, according to Jack Ryder,
his veteran coach.
Stricken Monday, Boston's famed
flying parson will be hospitalized
until late next week.
'Then he will return to his
Wheaton, HI., home to rest up before
starting his outdoor training for an
Olympic team berth," Ryder said.
Dodds plans to quit competitive
running after the Olympics," Ryder
continued. "So I guess he has run
his last Indoor race."
Friends who visited Dodds yes
terday said he had a high fever and
was much more uncomfortable than
when first admitted to the hospital.

Anglers Warned
Of Coast Closure
PORTLAND, Feb. 11 (IP) The
state game commission today Issued
a reminder to anglers that coastal
waters are closed to salmon and
steelhead fishing In March and
April.
Affected are all lakes and streams
south of the Columbia that are trib
utary to the Pacific ocean and to
all lakes and streams below St.
Helens that are tributary to the
Columbia river. The Columbia Itself
and streams east of St. Helens are
not affected by the closure.

Mexican gunners for years have
disregarded a government law Dun
ning the commercial sale of wild
ducks. Street venders sell birds al
most daily on Mexico City's fash
ionable Pasco de la Kcforma. Wild
duck dinners are served so cheaply
in border towns that they are of
especial attraction to many diners
from areas to the north in the
United States.
At least 15 different species are
slaughtered by the Mexican market
gunners, with pintails killed in the
greatest numbers. Pintails predom
inate because more of that kind tly
through Mexico en route to North
ern South America.
The Mexican season lasts from
November 16 to March 15, a maxi
mum allowance under the U. S.
Mexlcan Migratory Bird Treaty act,
but veteran hunters say they seldom
have seen a warden Inspect a bag.
Several wardens have disappear
ed after having gone out to check
on commercial shooting.

three individual batteries. The larger

sitting ducks. Another third, mak
ing up the second tier, Is timed to
tire a few feet above the marsh as
the birds rise. The remainder of the
charges comprising the third tier
are elevated, timed to catch sur
vivors of the first blasts In the air.
Weapons are made of Iron tubes,
or pipes, up to two Inches In diame
ter. They are loaded through the
muxzles with powder, paper and
charges of small scrap Iron or nails,
nuts and bolts. Breeches are wired
to electrlo batteries, fired simultane
ously by a spark from a dray battery
set off by switches at one-second
Intervals from safe distances.

horses or cattle as screens between

birds are frightened only by the

open until November 18. market
